If it's a works bike it'll get a new one every day.
I always ran my off road bikes with non o ring chains and no lubrication (I just cleaned them), the chains lasted longer that way, if you lube them the sand sticks to the oil and makes a really nice grinding paste.

Best I found was a chain oiler filled with thin oil wound up to max, the oil dripping off the chain cleaned it as you went along.

We ride twice a week in the sand dunes. No problems.

See? It's what the experts have been saying for years.

Shafties can't wheelie.

Try, it all goes horribly wrong.

Ouch. That would have hurt. And would have been expensive...

Bit extreme just to emulate your hero ;)

I do think this pic speaks a lot about the 500 2 stroke era

The first two bikes I owned had enclosed chain cases, which were a bit of a double-edged sword. The chain and sprox certainly lasted longer being enclosed, but there was a great temptation to just forget about the chain until horrible noises started emanating from within.

Wouldn't it be possible to make a modern hi-tech version of a chain enclosure, or would the weight penalty not justify it?

I was looking for a Joey Dunlop early morning gritty practice photo with a haze of blue twostroke smoke but my Google Foo (well Duck Duck Go actually) failed me.

Some old knacker showing us that they still got it.

Maybe use a solid chain and a couple of gears, since you're enclosing it :D
