It's hardly a surprise, a new bike with decent power and a fast rider, you could go a step further and put Rossi on a 1988 TDR250 and he'd probably have most of them off.
On the road I think it's long been established that a decent adventure bike (or any purpose built road styled bike) is going to be nicer to ride and probably quicker from A to B than a race rep. And even on the track you're only going to be faster if you can exploit the bike, for anyone this side of a BSB rider it doesn't really matter what bike you're on as long as you're comfortable.
Years ago I had a TT top ten finisher out on a CG125 for his test. He passed... once I'd stopped him taking the racing line everywhere.
As a treat I took the scenic route back from the test centre across the Marsh. F*ck, he was quick. I let him have a bit of fun and could barely keep up with him on my Dominator 650. After a few minutes, I reined him in, in order to let the other trainee catch us up
I've posted this before back on TRC,but well worth a watch for how a 250 performs against the big boys of the day. An old workmate of mine Gary Cowan on the 250 Yamaha.
The end of the race cut off on the first vid. The second one shows the full race, but even shittier quality pic.

You had an F1, the F2 is slower than the F1 because the cdi is shite.
But a proddy race YPVS 350 does about 130mph, a GSX1100 did about 135mph, the YPVS handles a lot better and can accelerate out of corners better despite having 60% of the power of a GSX1100.
Sorry. I wasn't clear. Formula 2 was a racing class. 350 Proddy bikes with any tuning you like and big carbs and Spannies. Almost the speed of a TZ but with tractability of the LC.
Mine was a flyer
Sorry my mistake, yes F2 LCs were bloody fast, a Len Manchester one went through the TT speed trap at 165mph according to Motorcycle Mechanics in 1984 (I must have been seriously impressed by this to remember it after all this time)
My Stan Stephens stage 2 YPVS went from indicating 125mph to 135mph just by fitting a pair of Lomas F2 exhausts, it was tractable enough to use as a road bike without any problems.
The Len Manchester bikes were 375 and 400 as that was the TT class limit. A lot of clubs ran a 350 F2 class and we suspected LM's bikes were running too big

Good enough for the outright lap record
That is impressively quicker!
Chapeau!
Some quick lads on that list. Kevin Maudsley first 100mph TT lap 350 prod.
Dean Askin future Marlboro Clubmans champ and Charlie Corner who had international license.

I spotted Maudsley in that list and remember Dean Askin too. Don't recall Charlie Corner though - good name!

Ah, the days when the top riders actually rode at home... must have been one of the last times a full GP bike turned out for a national event.
Watching Morrison get closer and closer to the inside kerb and watching Cowan STILL find the gap and make it stick was wonderful.
Was at Cadwell for a track day about 8 to 10 years ago, and one of the instructors was a South African (his name escapes me at the moment).
He was on a GS1150, and was faster than anyone, which was even more noticeable when the track got damp after a light shower. Bike was standard, including tyres. Most impressive.
