To put the original story in perspective the noise limit is about the limit they use on uk track day drive by tests but in a 30mph zone which doesn't sound too unreasonable. Not a massive fan of really loud pipes but some of mine aren't factory quiet so it's not for me to say what people do. However. I do think people who rev the tits off bikes and cars in 30s are proper pricks.

They certainly shouldn't be RADAR (RAdio Direction And Ranging) but they shouldn't be SONAR (SOund Navigation And Ranging) either. They are sound intensity measuring thingys. AKA Db meters.

When you think about it, this radar/microphone thing will be a fair distance from the end of your pipe, Taking into account the acceptable db level, I doubt it'll be much of a concern.

I can see living just up the road from a bikers cafe being a bit noisy, but don't we get used to things. RAF Shawbury is a stone's throw from me, helicopter training facility. When we first moved there 14 years ago, you'd be in bed 11pm and it was all you could hear, today I never notice them.

We've also got an MX track 1 mile away, when there racing you hear them. They race on Sundays and along with all the garden equipment noises it really isn't a problem.

I'm sticking with the two words.

So, a bit like speed cameras, once you know where the new db checks are and take appropriate action (roll off the throttle) it's not a problem?

Sound measurement can be very complicated, you can apply weightings to account for distance, time, air density etc etc etc, and get the same result from a microphone 5 cm or 5 meters away from the source

Unlike a camera, it won't catch you from distance so fixed ones will get location known and if they have mobile device's you'll just roll off I would imagine.

French plod are particularly hot on spot checking balding tyres.
Don't forget that even the car CT (MOT) is every two years there, that's an awful lot of tyre wear between CT checks ....

Maybe not... I've slightly overdone the wear limit on a couple myself, but I've seen a scary number of bald rear tyres on French-plated bikes over the years. Down at the Bol one year, there was even a front showing the wire cords... is it connected to the lack of a roadworthiness inspection? Maybe... maybe French bikers are even tighter than me.

Funny - I always expect to see way more terribly ratty French bikes than I actually do. I rarely see anything actually running that is as old as mine (knocking 25 years).
I wonder whether not having a regular CT means that bike serviceable life is curtailed, and that they're typically terrible home mechanics.

Where I live all I can hear in the distance is the boy racers, hitting the limiters as they go through 1st and 2nd gears when leaving junctions, absolute pain in the farter.

Do pop over to NW2 and tell the tit on the R6 that. It's almost certainly the same bike that I hear going up the main road a good quarter of a mile away, since he never changes gear.
