No doubt it happens in Egypt, too, so quite why you went back to the Pharaohs for your bait I don't know.
They're the worlds biggest monument to slave owning monarchs.
Perhaps they'll get to them. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I take issue with the term 'built' when it comes to the Pyramids anyway. They're just neat piles of stones is all.

They'd have been huge houses if the architect hadn't made the mistake of folding the plans in half.

Along with many others, and despite whatever justification for what they did, it was a surprise that they were acquitted.

AAMOI, if they'd toppled a statue in the UAE and found guilty, what would the likely punishment be?

I tried searching, but can't identify from the three tiers what the likely offence would be.

Troubled? You misunderstood, it was idle curiosity. But I'd still be interested to hear.

My - limited - experience of UAE was of a four-level society. The people I was working with were:
Wearing robes
Wearing uniform
Wearing civvies
Wearing PPE

At one point, as we were leaving offices, a chap held a door open for us. The robes and uniform acted as if the door had opened itself :)

I don't think that's unique to the Middle East. There are rude, entitled people everywhere.

There is a reason for that, and if you keep following the thought process eventually you'll get there.

Whilst I agree that the statues caused some controversy but decisions to take them down should be done in a democratic way. Not mob rule.

They broke the law.
That's the thing about jury trials, jurys can be unpredictable. Sometimes they find their own way to what they think is the right outcome.

I came across a FB thread that a pal had replied to about that tennis player Novac wassisface.

Hundreds of replies and about half were praising him and calling the Aussies evil bastards.

Hmm. He made a choice. Australia made theirs.

Looks like Djokovic tried to play off the Australian Open organisers (with the backing of Victoria State where the Open is due to be held) against the Australian government. One guess as to who has the final say.

Nigel Farage is very vocally anti the Bristol statue topplers.

I was glad to hear a trial by jury came down in favour of taking a stand against glorifying slavery and racism. Regardless of what would happen in a totalitarian regime with a poor human rights and no free press.

It seems the pendulum swings to favour the intellectual left; probably for a very considerable time. The northern poor have been burned; the toxics are a self solving problem; the small-time tories are a minority. It's only a question of how long before and in what way we reunite with Europe.

If any copycat student warriors think this means they can damage more monuments, they may find they don’t get the same jury.
