I'm gonna go out a limb here, but I reckon they used the stairs.

Someone I know of rebuilt his Guzzi 850 California in one of the rooms of his London flat. The thing came up in pieces, the fun began when he had to get it out and down to ground level, no lift just some zig-zag concrete stair.
Similar in appearance to this block.

Guy I knew assembled a bike in an upstairs bedroom.

Luckily, the door was in-line with the stairs.

He sat on it, to use the rear brake to control speed of descent.

Unluckily, it pulled out the stair carpet. At the top. And kept going.
Even bland can be a type of character

Seems to be a common theme this. My mate built a Bantam in his spare room. He called us round to help him get it down the stairs. It didn't quite get round the bend and he damaged the bike and a lot of stair spindles and wallpaper and to end it even worse he tripped going out the front door and dented the tank on the doorframe. Fecking thing looked worse than it did before it went up to his spare room! :D Oh and his parents went ballistic at the damage to stairs, wallpaper and carpet!

I was looking after a pt a couple of years ago - he said an old club mate had his Harley up on the 10 th floor to work on it .
Stood the bike on end to get it in the lift (I’d imagine with some hefty goons to help)

I think there was grand tour piece where Hammond visited a bloke who built a kit car in his living room. He knocked his front room wall out to get the thing out.
