What paid for outdoors / mapping app?

I had Viewranger which I really liked but it's turned into Outdooractive and I don't much like its tone.

Is there anything better than the OS?

I've got the OS one that costs £30 a year, it's fucking superb, so long as you can read OS maps.

I had the OS app which was good but 2 things really annoyed me about it. 1. The map couldn't rotate on the screen so was always North up. And 2. If you don't have mobile signal then the app won't open. No fucking use to man not beast when your in the forest or on open moor without signal.

I use komoot, the map isn't os but it's plenty good enough. It's very very good for finding routes that others have done to follow and it does the Strava thing of recording activities and providing stats. It's cheap too.

The other map that I use is Locus map, this takes a bit more time to get used to but there's many maps to choose from. This one has got live location tracking and is pretty cheap too.

I used to have the OS one and bought several of the maps to use on it, for a while all was quite good but then they changed it so I couldn't use those maps which I had paid for without mobile signal.
Now theres workarounds but the main time I want an OS map is when I don't have good signal so it was absolutely fucking useless to me.
That shit that I uninstalled it. Check the reviewed and theyve gone drastically downhill since that change.

Used OS map paper job then had that bit installed as there was a code with the map.
Mainly on North Downs/South Downs as even though it’s a public footpath sometimes it’s not completely clear which way to go (changes to route).
Was handy in that you could use the online map to make sure you were going in the right direction .
As we were in the soft shandy drinking south signal wasn’t a prob too often.

Memory Map. I got the full UK 2022 OS maps (both 1:25K and 1:50K) for about £30. Desktop and mobile so you can plan routes at hone and upload the .GPX file to your phone. Been using it for about 10 years, its very good.

I only got the OS monthly and as you can't download maps I might change.

Do you get OS maps included on Memory Map for the £30 a year? It looks like you can also buy them from them but maybe that's a separate thing.

The app is free (I think) and then you either buy credit to download the tiles you need or pay an annual fee for all the UK Ordnance Survey maps.

Having bought annual subscriptions to Memory Map twice, I got a perpetual subscription. It is handy and works well.

Ooh...thread resurrection! I used to use Memory Map on PC (IIRC you could do 3D view with exaggerated height/contour and 'fly-through' a route, which were fun but I used to print maps out for hiking if I didn't have the paper one). Had another one for France which you bought and downloaded the areas you need.

Now I just use an annual subscription to OS on my tablet and PC (still use paper maps and prints combined with Google maps/Garmin watch when in the great outdoors).

I was always a Strava user when doing any outdoor activity, mainly when I did a little bit of running then when I got serious with cycling. I don’t use them any more.

I did notice the other day that my new Garmin golf watch automatically uploaded my golf round (walk) to my Strava account as I out of the blue has a random like for my activity and that’s what it was.
