It's not possible to stop such reboots, The web-service soft reboots go when a site is added/deleted from httpd.conf as a service restart, to load new data for domains.
Does that mean that the more successful they become, the more likely it is to happen? [Hence the dedicated server offer?]
Tbh mate, I don really know. I'm not sure how big or small our current provider actually is. When we started this game it was just a random one I clicked in Google.

Maybe it's something that needs more thought.

Yes I know, again.

I've pinged our friendly tech expert for some ideas on who's better to move to. Will get some ideas on prices, options and costings in the coming weeks.

Be aware though, there may be funding needed both for the move and for the techie to go through with us as we'll need backups in a better context than we have along with the knowledge on how to transfer everything to new forum.

Cheers. I'm sure many will be happy to contribute but let's not get too hasty yet. Apart from the last 2 days, the site has been 99.99999% stable and happy.

But trust me, me logging calls with the provider is far more irritating than the forum being down for you guys, especially on NYE.

So we'll see what the other phpbb nerds say and we've got 6 weeks before we pay our yearly subs.

I don't visit that many other forums nowadays but it's not uncommon for them to get maintenance work, outages, etc, so what we're experiencing isn't uncommon. But I'll be the first to agree, it's a pain.

It's vaguely irritating as a user but not exactly life-threatening. Don't remember it happening with TRC, wonder what platform that was on? Is FB still around to ask?

VBulletin i think they used

https://www.vbulletin.com/en/purchases

It did go down a few times but not a great deal. Apart from a few updates there was never a great issue TBH.

I think ours would still be 99.99% over the 2 years so I'm not exactly fuming.

Well that's another this morning, same failure, same message, so we're bailing.

After chatting to our techie mate, we're jumping to https://www.kualo.co.uk/?utm_source=uk- ... =home_page

It's not up for renewal until the 13th march, but I guess we can jump ship any time at all really, so I just need to chat to Tech Wiz and then get us started on the process for moving and buying a new provider etc.

I'll keep you posted as and when it starts and where we all are with it in terms of costings. It depends really if we jump in for a 12 month period or if we go longer and they offer a discount. Odds are, we'll just go 12 months.

One thing to note, this is just the back end hosting that will change. Everything you see will remain 100% as it is. It's just the stuff I see that will be swapping.

Chatting to Tech Wiz.
Another failure today, so we're going to come and join you I reckon.

Some questions if you don't mind.

1. I assume we don't need to wait until our current deal expires? (Ignore discount stuff for now)
2. Is there a code that you benefit from if we move? Referral type thing
3. Shall we just let them do the work moving site?

Cheers as always
1) No need to wait, I didn't when I moved to Kualo. You will still get the 6 months free if you follow the instructions

2) http://my.kualo.com/uk/go/00913

3) The advantage of them doing it is its going to take a lot less time to transfer the files and database as it will be a direct connection server to server.

The disadvantage is that they will may enable their "one click" software which will cause issues later. Moving it yourself requires you to copy everything to your PC and then upload it to the server, redirecting the domain etc etc.

Probably the best thing for you would be to chat with them, say what you want, and what you don't want (ie you don't want automatic updates of phpBB as it will screw your settings) Tell them the size of your database, the total size of your files and anything else you can think of thats relevant to you and your site.

Hope that helps

James
So a few things that require a bit of checking and sorting before we jump ship.
