Upside down fork hub lugs

Post by Trogladyte »

I thought I just had a blown fork seal. But the chrome has worn right through on the tubes. New ones for the Griso are £stupid, and are only listed as complete units - with the hub lugs attached. But I've seen separate tubes advertised at Teo Lammers.

So...is it possible to get the hub lugs off, and just replace the tubes?

The fork lowers usually screw on to the chrome sanctions. Might need a bit of force to get them to shift tho'

Yes, but you might be better to get your existing stanchions rechromed by Phillpotts

If you're London based go and see ABE in Greenwich, they'll be able to help.

On a lot of Jap forks (Showa especially) there is a small grub screw (Torx or Allen head)on the unseen side that needs to be undone first. It's normally held in with strong Loctite; the stuff that needs serious heat to get to loosen. Once that's out then you need to heat up the whole area where the fork tube screws in, as that is also held in with strong Loctite. Plumbers torch with MAPP gas is the job. Ideally you need to clamp the fork leg in a vice making sure you don't gouge the fork leg, heat the fork lowers good and proper then use a tube or bar through the axle mount to unscrew the base from the fork leg.

A M Phillpott in Luton?

I've used them loads for work stuff, making various mandrels and tools from scratch. They certainly know their stuff with chromed cylinders.

I know they do vehicle restoration stuff too. I've never had any dealings with them for "members of the public" type work but if its the same dudes doing it I'd recommend em.

Can't speak to the price....they were always competitive for me, but I was a professional customer making stuff from scratch. I don't think I've ever spent less than £500 with them.

I've had fork legs re-chromed by Philpotts. At the start they told me what the turn round time was and kept to that, in fact they came back slightly earlier. Work was top quality - flawless chrome, so you do get what you pay for. I'd recommend them.
