Motorcycling: safer than skiing or horse riding
Re: Motorcycling: safer than skiing or horse riding
I know if I crash my bike it’s most probably something I’ve done.
I’ve seen the gf and kids have horses just bugger off fly kicking and bucking as it goes for no more a reason than a crisp packet blew in the wind, when 3/4 ton horses decide they’re doing something you’re along for the ride.

Re: Motorcycling: safer than skiing or horse riding
Quite a while ago, I actually pulled out all the deaths by various recreations in response to a 'motorcycling's deadly' post on the old VD forum.
I've long since lost that research but I did find a quick link to some recent stats for Scotland.
The most common cause of accidental death in Scotland in 2017 was falls (982 deaths, 42% of all accidental deaths) , closely followed by accidental poisoning by and exposure to noxious substances (923 deaths, 39% of all accidental deaths). Transport accidents caused 174 deaths (7 per cent).
I was quite surprised to find you have a slightly higher risk of drowning than you do of killing yourself on two wheels, yet I've missed the calls to ban swimming.
And accidents in the home kill almost 20 times more people than does motorcycling. In the UK, seventy people die in DIY accidents each year and amazingly one blogger used this in order to say that DIY's not dangerous because "nearly 2000 people a year die in car accidents, and that doesn’t stop you getting in your car". Indeed, but you do have a safety belt in a car. I've yet to see a DIYer using on up a ladder!

Mrs S used to do horse riding as a kid.
She broke her collarbone so often they ended up taking one of them out completely.
Which causes no end of consternation and amusement whenever she has to have an X-ray.

I had a neurologist tell me he saw more head injuries from horse riders than from motorcyclists. I'd been run over by a motorcyclist shortly before that.

For one work client, we have to start formal meetings with a 'safety moment'. They don't want the 'toolbox talk' briefing type, instead it is preferable to have something personal that provokes a short discussion. (Through a long project, this can become a challenge)The Spin Doctor wrote: ↑Fri Nov 26, 2021 1:32 pm Indeed, but you do have a safety belt in a car. I've yet to see a DIYer using on up a ladder!
I did one on 'working from home', we have lost first aid and fire cover, and all of the other HS&E stuff we take for granted.
