I've heard that a lot, but it's not really true, some people have been very important in history and they left their mark on the world, even thousands of years later.

I'm not, I'm just another bloke floating around in the soup, but some people leave a big hole when they leave the planet and if it wasn't for them doing what they did we'd be worse off. Sometimes you don't even know, imagine if the electrician had accidentally buggered up the power in Alexander Flemming's lab and he'd had to pack in work just before he discovered penicillin.
I think there’s very few if any* discoveries that could only have been made by one person. If one person hadn’t discovered it then another would have done. They’re more discoveries by the human race than by individuals.

*I remember reading somewhere there’s a consensus that if Einstein hadn’t come up with general relativity then we’d still be waiting for it now.

Mmmm, I thought we were discussing one's importance in an organisation or business rather than one's importance to humanity in general or an individual's importance in history.

My bad. ☹

I just asked one of my best pals what he thought of the anti vaxxers.

"Yes send them home if they haven't vaxed with a body bag or a big bill from the NHS if they need treating."

He was in intensive care for 3 weeks and still iffy a year later.

Iirc, Einstein 'came up with relativity' while he was working as a clerk in a patents office. He wasn't employed as a theoretical physicist at the time and to answer your question, no, It don't care at all. It's irrelevant as I didn't have a patent pending which Einstein should have been thinking about.

Einstein and many others gained importance because of what they did not because of where they did it or who they did it for. Einstein should maybe have been sacked from the patents office if his thinking about relativity was getting in the way of the work he was being paid for. My importance test would have been spot on - to that organisation he had no real importance. He would simply have been replaced. Would he have been replaced by another Einstein? I doubt it just as I doubt you'd be replaced with another potter but you'd be replaced without too many ripples.

You have a number of skills and abilities but I doubt you are paid for all of them even though you may feel that you use or have to use all of them to do your job. You do not get paid for irreplacability. You are only important in that you do what they pay you to do and there are plenty of people around who can probably do your job just as well.

In the great sceme of things and dependind on the business, a ckeaner may be more important than you (cleaners may do a lot more to prevent the spread of i fectious diseases for example) but the impotance test will still apply. You are replacable and your going will only produce a ripple in the organisation. It may be more dramatic for you personally or your family of course but even your family will get over your departure.

Merry Christmas.

Ah well, that's tomorrow afternoon with my side of the family visit off, DIL has just tested positive. She has a slightly high temperature, sneezing, sore throat (they went to a wedding a week ago). Son and kids all good.

That's crap. Hope they are OK.

Must say last Christmas we were all good considering and made the most of it. This year couldn't be more different. Me catching it the 23rd and my son getting it yesterday has knocked the arse out of it after 2 years of lockdowns and covid. There were some good points yesterday but both kids went to bed in tears at not seeing people and its been a really tough couple of days mentally. If ever you needed proof that Xmas is more than presents I'd show you my kids right now. Bloody heart breaking it is and we've got off lightly.

Covid wise I feel fine except sore throat. Boy had a headache and has a cough but fine physically fine thank god. But mentally it's fucked us this Xmas.

Some of my friends, or their staff, tested positive Friday and yesterday. So that cramped all our styles for Christmas

TBF, it hasn't felt remotely like Christmas to me and I've been a bit bloody miserable

Luckily one friend is similarly distant from most people as I am and has been testing regularly, so we still had dinner out last night.

But it's been a rubbish Christmas this year (along with not getting to talk to family. Not sure why, I did try, but hey ho :( :( )

Everybody's getting it.

With a virus this infectious where people can infect many others for perhaps two days before symptoms show there's not much point having lockdowns.

Edit: infectious

That's exactly how mine started. Felt like I'd gargled razor blades. Was negative on day 1 but definitely had it at that point

PCR has come back negative.

It appears that it is still possible to be ill with things other than covid. Who knew?

I've tested negative again today. Just been asked to do more shifts at work cos a couple of drivers in the valley are positive

A friend has said that if I've had Covid recently that should prevent me getting it again for three months. So I'm madly crossing fingers as that would see me through till after February!

I'm testing every time we go out somewhere or have friends round ours.
Negative every time. By rights I should be riddled with 'Rona as I'm taking a fairly sanguine view of the whole thing, live and work near London, lick random stranger's faces, etc...
I reckon I've got 'Rona-resistant Gene's or summat.

Edit: talking of testing, anyone struggling to pick up testing kits? All our local chemists are empty.
