We've been living in an era of cheap energy for at least the last 20 years, unfortunately we're in for a kick in the teeth when it comes to the cost of many things, I for see an era of high prices and high taxes ahead of us.

I imagine if you’re on a contract and not touched by this yet- you’ll not quite get why this is bad news.

Locked in @ £100 a month for another 5 months, but I get it, sitting here all smug for now, but slightly worried about coming off contract later if things don't improve

I'm in a similar situation, locked in until April at about £90/month. I can afford to pay more, obviously I'd rather not, so I'm not particularly worried but I know how it feels to struggle from one pay cheque to the next, so I do have sympathy.

Net zero is the cause of the problem of course. We'll struggle every winter until our incompetent leaders realise that you can't generate enough power for the country using wind, solar and unicorn farts. There aren't enough unicorns to make up the difference.

Just make them more productive.
If you put blinkers on them they're less self-conscious about the sparkly wind power.

Ditto, the fixed deals hadn't been much better than the cap for a while so I didn't bother fixing until just before the cap went up. I could only find an 18 month deal though

I haven't told anyone else here as now I can turn the thermostat down without arguments. Talking of which I'm still looking for a thermostat that takes physical exertion to turn up, people may find they aren't that cold after all.

That statement is irrelevant, either way the usage will still cost 50% more, so regardless of what temperature you have the thermostat set at, whether you have it cool or warm or whatever, it will still cost 50% more. To imply everyone has their house temps too high is a bit naive especially when the majority of the nation try and cut back on household energy bills as it is.

Not really.
The unit price for UK natural gas, in £, has increased 676% over the past year.
The unit price for EU natural gas, in €, has increased 785% over the past year.

Good news for those producing renewable energy.

And maybe higher prices will cause people to be more careful using energy. As the cheese says, we have been living unsustainably. Things will change. The polluters will pay.



And if you think energy is expensive now, wait until carbon capture is introduced. I was talking to some key stakeholders about delivery of the HyNet hub the other day. Before we all drove off in our Five Series and big Jags.

"Net zero" is only one driver of the huge increases in energy prices, there are other drivers such as denuclearization, reduced gas storage, low wind levels, politics, ...

Due to the price of diesel and insurance and the likes i was working out of i need to put my prices up next year. I do and it only worked out at about 50p an hour if that. Sod carrying change about for all the folk who like paying cash so a £1 it is. That will cover and future hikes till next year. Reading some of the hikes you lot had i better charge a fiver more

I got a new 2 year fix in September, only to go pop in October. Been switched to shell and according to my wife's colleague's it will probably double. ☹

Everything is going up and you don't know if it's justified or not. Companies just jumping on the wagon.

I'm not sure how much is just jumping on the bandwagon, there's plenty of competition out there for most things and most people know how to shop around so I think few companies will be taking the piss.

My fixed rate ends in a couple of months. Looks like at least doubling. Unfixed is noticeably cheaper - but I suspect that's a mug game, and they'll have your pants down in a flash as soon as you're off contract.

Martin says to hold your nerve and do nothing. i.e fix at the last possible moment?
