Not too chuffed, but I bet our Covid figures are lower than UK.

I think most countries in Europes covid figures (deaths or cases) are lower than the UKs.

I can't see where it says that deaths in those countries are recorded in the same way or whether all the countries carry out the same number of tests.

It's simple really, if one particular country records covid deaths in a different way, for example, a death within 28 days of a positive test is a covid death and other countries only record deaths that were directly attributable to covid then I think some of those numbers are going to be debatable. Likewise if one country is carrying out many tests than the others they're probably going to record more cases.

Bare figures like those in the report quoted don't mean much really do they, unless you just want to look for a 'worst' country.

Err, nope. That statement has so much fail in it that its hard to quantify. I'm just not into making excuses to cover up for bad policies.

I love my country and really want it to be the best it can. Currently rather better than is.

If there was a standout model that genuinely worked, head and shoulders above the rest, then there's enough data being generated that other countries would adopt it quick as a flash.

There isn't. Too may variables. Too much lad between actions and impacts. Too little support for severe solutions with temporarily unwelcome and costly side effects.

It's a case of "least bad" solutions. And accepting that experts with decades of experience actually know what they're doing.

I don't think there's examples of UK/euro countries strongly under/over performing, not long term anyway. They're all similarly reactively flailing against their current and short term issues.

I know a nurse who works at the PRU Hospital near me. Her ward is being put to use as a covid ward as from next week, as the number of covid cases rise. Interestingly, she said only 4 patients in the hospital are serious (which I assume to mean in ICU), and all of those have underlying issues, the vast majority being what she called 'incidental' cases, where people are admitted for something unrelated but testing positive whilst in the hospital, and most of those are simply displaying cold-like symptoms.

Mrs Gremlin and I will not be going to any crowded, sweaty parties tonight, mind. Not due to fears of covid, but because Mrs. G got steaming drunk last night and has the Mother of all Hangovers.

Similar locally, because it’s so widespread now a lot of people are being admitted for other stuff but they are also positive for Covid. It still creates difficulties for the hospital as they have to be treated as infectious but that may well be away from the unit they need to be on for the primary reason they’re there.

Same here. No one feels worse than if they have a bad cold/head cold. No massive flu symptoms

But - easier to get out early tomorrow morning cos the only couple of people up here I know that aren't positive (and are people I'd go drinking with!) are working

I've just got back from work and am having a snack in lieu of dinner and then going to bed. With a bit of luck the grockles in my building won't make too much noise when they crash back later and I can get up really early and go for a short ski tour - just to see the sunrise, then a coffee, home and back to work!!


TBF, after a friend deciding not to live anymore a couple of years ago on the 30th Dec, and the last couple of years not being exactly cheery, I'm not overly positive about NYE. Pretty sure I'm not gonna catch it again so soon after the last bout, but just not feeling very peopley!!

So as a house we are now Covid free Spent 26 days of Dec in isolation all our Xmas plans down the shitter.

Kids were both completely fine. Both complained of a headache for 1 day each.

Mrs was the worst, mainly tiredness and slept for days. Was ill for 6-7 days.

For me I found it changed pretty much daily symptoms wise. Started with a sore throat, then a night of chills. Next day sore throat and cough. Following day sore throat and completely fine, day after sore throat gone but cough. Overall the isolation was worse than the covid so I'll take that as a win. Pre Covid if I had the same symptoms I wouldn't have taken a single day off sick. No idea if I had omicron but it was very mild. Don't know if the booster I had helped with how mild it was, I had the booster 3 weeks before catching it.

So thats Covid out the way for a few months hopefully. Although brother's mate had covid end of Oct and got it again mid Dec.

Let's hope in the main it moves forward as mild as we got it.

Isolation finished for us as well. I was fairly asymptomatic, wifey less so. Daughter a bit rough with a bad cough.

I do work for a couple of elderly sisters. One emailed me two days ago asking of i can pop down this week and do some gardening. "We are self isolating having tested positive" she asked. Her partner is terminal with cancer and has a Tracheotomy after throat cancer two years ago. Apparently they are both dong fine and itching to get out again what is not bad for two late 70 year olds. Her sister phoned tonight who i am due at this Friday. "Dont come this Friday as she also need to self isolate after testing positive" She is 81 and apart from a running nose and slight sore head on Hogmanay she has never been up nor down.

Either triple jab works or this Omicron is not what its all cracked up to be but i am still not dong them two's garden till way into next week
