That’s because 85%+ plus of people have been double jabbed and 56% have had the booster.

No, I think dividing the number of available nurses by the number of Covid patients was bizarrely irrelevant. From your subsequent comments it appears you do too.

You're the one who thinks 7,500 patients are "clogging up" a system with more than 300,000 nursing staff. If that's the case, it's time to hire some better nurses.

I’ll try and give you an example. Mrs W works on a 12 bed CICU. The model is that there’s a daily cardiac list that is worked through, the patient comes out of theatre into CICU. They are kept in there until they are weaned off the vent and other organ support. They are then whisked off to HDU leaving the bay for the next victim.

There’s generally a few (cardiac) long termers in there but most are only in there a day or so.

Currently, about a third of the beds are taken up by long term General ICU patients (trauma, organ failure etc). The reason for this is that general ICU is taken up by covid patients, of which 80% are unvaccinated. They are also working in full PPE which brings its own issues.

The upshot of this is that the elective cardiac list is not being fully done. Add to the mix the out of hospital arrests which you need to leave some capacity for.

The surgeons are there twiddling their thumbs but as there’s no available CICU beds to hand over to they can’t do the ops.

It’s also worth saying that pre-pandemic there has never been any general ICU patients in CICU. And this also brings its own issues with the skills mix. Not all ICU bays/patients are the same.

So, yes. The unvaccinated are most, most definitely clogging up the system.

Locally it’s not overwhelmed (as yet) but it is absolutely having a huge effect on patient care.

I was talking to a nurse (brothers gf) the other day and I asked her what she and her colleagues thought of the non vaxxers coming into the hospitals, taking up beds. You can imagine the answer. 🤬🤬🤬

They’ll be the first ones to stamp their feet demanding treatment as well.

Are they still waving their banners from their beds?

They won't be waving their anti-vaxxer banners, they'll be waving their "poor me, vaccinate me now" banners. Too late of course.

So the unvaccinated aren't going to cause another lockdown, because it's vaccinated people that are infected.
Though the bigger problem appears to be people not going to work because they've found an excuse not to go.

Both the unvaccinated and vaccinated are being infected. However, something like 90% of Covid patient hospital beds are occupied by unvaccinated patients who also occupy beds for longer than vaccinated patients. I have never seen the bed turnover issue discussed anywhere.

It's not the number of infections that are the issue. If, due to jabs, all it causes is a few sniffles and sweats then it can rip through the population as it pleases. It's when the sniffles and sweats turn in to hospital admissions and the need for acute care that's the problem.

And currently, it's the unvaccinated that are making up the vast majority of admissions.

Further on:

Javid told the Commons last Tuesday that “despite the incredible effort to boost uptake across the country, there are still approximately 94,000 NHS staff who are unvaccinated.

&

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) impact assessment of its policy found that as many as 126,000 unvaccinated staff could lose their job when the rule comes into force on 1 April.

I had a call from M this morning, she's in Devon. She was heading to her mum and dad's on Thursday for Christmas but her mum tested positive last night so the trip is off. Her parents, both around 80 yoa are both vaccinated and boosted but her dad has terminal cancer. This will probably be his last Christmas.

I've told M they need to get the hospice nurse around to arrange support for her Mum who has her own issues (arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome) and is now isolating in the house and beating herself up as she thinks she's done it all wrong. At the least there should be help from the District Nurses.

We're hoping that any effects of the virus are going to be minimal and short lived but it's a bummer any way you look at it.

My mother in law got a terminal diagnosis a few months ago and got distirct nurses and hospice at home care. It took a lot of nagging to get the GPs round as it needs two of them but once done support came in regularly. A few other things took much nagging and a long time (occupational health & any medical home visit) but can be done.
She's still alive and doing better than she was so it's now been taken away as she's went over her 6 month time limit to die.

The psychology is interesting, the pitchforks are out for anyone not wearing a mask or being vaccinated, because the government said so.
The same government that a lot of people think are full of shit and are out to get them.
The statistics supporting the efficacy of double vaccination followed by boost vaccination speak for themselves, not "because the government said so".
