Those ^ plus a few other recent votes in the commons would have made me think hard before voting for em.

Its kind of bizarre that the party rebels chose a public health bill to kick off over. Not sure they chose the best battleground to show the country tbeir caring side.
I do suspect that I'm not really their target...erm...demographic though.
Perhaps you're too young to remember what the English water industry was like pre-privatisation - beaches were far more polluted as were waterways, and water quality was far poorer.

Be that as it may, what the water companies are now doing is absolutely scandalous. They should be prohibited from paying dividends and invest in far more efficient sewerage processing infrastructure until all dumping of sewerage into waterways and the sea is stopped. And if necessary increase water prices with the proceeds required by law to be directly invested in improved infrastructure.

I'm gonna sound like Iccy here, but I think the idea of water companies paying dividends is wrong full stop.

Things like water, sewerage and power shouldn't be run to line pockets. This is where a proper state run infrastructure should be doing things.

Yeah, I know, where you gonna find one of those right?

I bet the Norwegians have one. Seems like the kind of thing they'd do.

I remember the UK's beaches being regarded as some of the most poluted in Europe and the EU issuing directives and legislation to lessen it, not sure it was so much the result of privatisation though?

That last link to the map is good though, nice to put a company name to the outlets into the local rivers.
Thanks for that.

Al Jezzera did a rather good documentary about water privatisation under the EU rules and the disaster that it was in one German city with eventually the residents holding a referendum to renationalise the water utility Vieola were running so badly and the bullying shenanigans of the EU and Vieola to try and prevent it.

Also a Greek island had its own water corporation and were ticking along nicely making enough to maintain and renew their system even under the Greek financial disaster. The EU and Vieola came along and basically tried bullying the islands govt into privatising the utility as they clearly weren’t charging the destitute locals enough for their water!

I know we've sidetracked slightly but thats the way conversations go so I'll go with it.
This makes for an interesting graphic and as far as I can work out shows the percentage of excellent clean beaches a country has?
