North Shropshire by-election
Practically no news on the North Shropshire by-election - not even any exit polls as far as I can see.
Usually the news media are all over by-elections, so what's different this time?

Re: North Shropshire by-election
No exit polls apparently, probably well after midnight for the result, but that won't stop the media from interviewing Shropshire denizens and from what they say extrapolating the future of this government for the next few years.
But if it doesn't go Boris "Peppa Pig" Johnson's way then no doubt the knives will be out for him

Re: North Shropshire by-election
Well, there we have it a nearly 200 year old tory stranglehold on the constituency is over - Tories lose North Shropshire seat they held for nearly 200 years
From a majority of 23,000 to losing by nearly 6,000. Looks like Bozo's bad luck run continues. Couldn't happen to a more deserving individual.
Bye, bye Bozo?

In a way I think that’s a bigger slap in the face for labour than it is for the tories.
Starmer can’t exactly stand up at the opposition box and berate Boris for losing the seat when labour got only a third of the votes the tories got,
Total turnout was 46% which was poor.

Let's hope so, time for changing of the guard.
And as said above, no comfort to Labour either who came a pathetic distant third.

Indeed, mixed blessings for the Labour party. Sadly, they're still unelectable.
Which begs the question as to which personification of entitlement will be chosen to replace Bozo? You could be facing the prospect of the embodiment of evil herself, Priti Patel. That'll learn ya'!

Liz Truss or Richi Sunak, preferably the former. Liz Truss doesn't mince her words, Sunak has a job to do as Chancellor, and Patel is too abrasive (imo).Lutin wrote: ↑Fri Dec 17, 2021 7:20 amIndeed, mixed blessings for the Labour party. Sadly, they're still unelectable.

Tactical voting, rather than blindly following party lines?

Liz Truss? Wouldn't that be replacing incompetence with ineffectiveness? I thought that Theresa May had that one soundly sewn up.

It's a protest vote, they're still all blue blooded Tories ffs.
With a protest vote, of the reasonably sentient, you vote for the least worst option in your mind.
This is the problem the Libs have had for ages, a significant proportion of their vote comes from protest against the Tory/Labour incumbent.

I’d agree with the protest vote point. It’s a slap position to remove the clown, which I suspect it will do.
Nobody to replace. Huge concern that Labour are going backwards. Nothing will really change come election time ( unless Bozo is still in).

Re: North Shropshire by-election
I actually feel sorry for the Libs. Today they're pleased as punch, landslide win, the tide is turning for them, it's not
They're missing such a huge opportunity here. The Tory government is sleaze central, run by a moron. Labour seem incapable of putting together a credible opposition while they still hide all the militant Party fules amongst their number.
You'd think the Libs would be picking them off like fish in a barrel. I had to Google who their leader is, that's how anonymous they've become. A stronger third party would make the rest of them up their game, it's too easy for them when it's a choice of red or blue only.

Re: North Shropshire by-election
A secure Tory seat with a majority of 23000 is hardly going to turn around and vote the 'communists' in, is it? The voters haven't changed, it's a protest, like the red wall falling.

Re: North Shropshire by-election
Apparently, according to several tories, it's not that Bozo is a liar, a charlatan and a clown that lost them the by-election, it's purely down to the fact that Owen Paterson resigned his seat. You know the one - he was totally innocent of any wrong doing and the tories wanted to change the rules to keep him in a job. Now they can't wait to blame him for the protest vote.

Re: North Shropshire by-election
Might be a protest vote but it's a Brexit voting area swinging to a party that voted to remain so they were pretty convinced they didn't want to vote conservative this time round.
In the voxpops I saw on tbe streets the people were saying they were sick of the corruption, and also of being ignored while money was spent on so called Red Wall constituencys?
Whatever the real reason it seems that they got an utter pasting, plus it seems many normally Labour voters decided to vote tactically to get the conservative candidate out.
I'm not totally convinced that it's just a message against Boris though, there's many others in his party who are upto their neck in corruption and enough people seem upset about that.
Dunno, interesting result.

Just goes to show that saying "Look at Dianne Abbott's Shoes!" can only get you so far. The Boris Bubble has burst. His blue wall tory constituencies abandon him cos he sucks.
The party will have to give him the push soon.
To have as outrageous a buffoon 'negotiating' Brexit and the sinister deep state move that is Aukus is beyond satire.
He exists in large part to simply soak up people's fear and loathing.
Who better to have in 'control' than a bad sitcom character who through arrogance, entitlement, incompetence, dishonesty and blatant corruption excels at pissing absolutely everyone off?
It's a post truth outrage that's almost impossible to comprehend.

Helen Morgan has fronted a massive Libdem campaign these last few weeks. She's been knocking on doors and cleverly listens with a very sympathetic ear to the issues folk raise, well mine anyway.
She got my wife's vote for this alone, and she's a lady. She lives local and it's a change, not that anything will. l

To be fair, aside from the privilege etc, Boris is a fairly simple bloke who did what most people would do in his position, he made sensible decisions early on and people liked him until recently because he did what the average bloke would do, there was a bit of buffoonery but generally it was no nonsense
The 48% saw someone who was prepared to fib his way through the brexit campaign and bluster his way to PM, that hasn't been forgotten. Simple as that. Seems that the rest of you took a couple if years to get hacked off with his bullshit.

I think he's realised you can't please everyone. It's either that way or the other way, doing both does nothing. iykwim.
It ain't easy managing modern day folk , their full of rights and little discipline, chuck a global pandemic in the equation and the job becomes impossible.

Re: North Shropshire by-election
The bit that gets me is that the rest of the Conservative party have been happy to vote to cover up corruption, allow water companies to polute our waterways more, then they spit the dummy and claim its Fascism when they get a health bill thats designed to protect people and they rebel against it.
Those ^ plus a few other recent votes in the commons would have made me think hard before voting for em.
Its kind of bizarre that the party rebels chose a public health bill to kick off over. Not sure they chose the best battleground to show the country tbeir caring side.
I do suspect that I'm not really their target...erm...demographic though.
