Soldering iron kit ? cheap and cheerful or anything to know about ?

If you are concerned about the wires entering the screw connectors I'd use boot-lace ferrules instead of soldering, pick up a set with the tool cheaply on Amazon, eBay etc....

If you are soldering just make sure some bastard hasn’t soldered a length of binding wire to the end of the solder reel and then watch as your colleagues swear away as the “solder” won’t melt and then they swear even more as they burn their finger tips checking the iron is hot.

I read it as though you were concerned with where the wires terminated in the plug body? Boot lace ferrules on the wire ends help prevent the strands squashing/breaking and give a better connection.

i was/am, i just had no idea what one of them was or is....

not sure if there's actually enough space in the connector/housing. But they may be smaller than they look.

Just noticed this if you are still looking for a soldering iron. its gas and got to be worth a go at the price. usually Aldi tools are decent enough quality.

There are a lot of sizes in the kit that I'll never use, unless I come up with a new use for them.
The ratchet action on the crimper is very good so you don't need to wonder whether you've applied enough pressure - it just does it. I tried it on a length of flex I'd removed from a panel heater. Tempted to disconnect the heater and put the ferrules on - just because I can now.

In this scenario, I’d disagree for a number of reasons:

1. Bootlace ferrules (using the tool(s) shown above) leave a square end on the cable that will be gripped tightly in the brass fitting
b. Soldering can compromise the insulation through over heating
iii. Soldered joints tend to to be brittle
4. The automotive industry uses crimped connections throughout vehicles due to the strength / conductivity of the terminal
x. The crimps linked above are not your Halfords nipped up solutions which are dire but ratcheted tools which give dependable connections

Obviously YMMV

I bought the Preciva kit.
Very impressed with it and I'm redoing a lot of connections around the house and car that I was not 100% satisfied with.
The connections are much more secure now and as a side-benefit look a whole lot more professional.

These are worth getting as well for situations where the insulation boot would get in the way.
