My London based step son says that Omicron is rampant, everyone's getting it, but it's pretty much like a 'flu epidemic.

Just loving the latest measures that will do exactly the sum total of fuck all to slow the spread of this, as it increasingly seems to be, endemic variant.

What measures would you implement if you were in charge?

Nothing obligatory because nothing will make any significant difference to the spread of this variant. But try to persuade people to get vaccinated/have boosters to minimise the damage to their health when they do contract it.

You don’t get tested positive and end up on a vent the next day.

One thing looks certain and that is, after having quite a mild delta experience, London are leading the charge again.

That probably tells us that the natural immunity (and the vaccine immunity) built up from previous variants isn’t working too well against omicron, at least in terms of infection prevention.

Pfizer has said its experimental COVID-19 pill appears to be effective against the Omicron variant.

The company said on Tuesday that final analysis of its 2,250-person study confirmed the pill, called Paxlovid, has promising early results against coronavirus.

The drug reduced combined hospitalisations and deaths by about 89% among high-risk adults when taken shortly after initial COVID-19 symptoms, Pfizer previously said.

My daughter was admitted to hospital again this week ( she’s out now).

Monday was very busy.
Tuesday the average wait for urgent treatment was 3 hours.
Yesterday it was 9 hours.

People quote literally queuing around the hospital to get in to A&E. The nurse looking after my daughter was on her 5th 12.5 hour shift in a row ( which breaks all sorts of laws but they are desperate). Many of us do long shifts, but how many of us have to run IVs and deal with life-threatening cases around the clock ( that’s what they are now, only critical people admitted).

When we left last night it was like the zombie apocalypse with many dozens still queuing around the block in the cold.

It might not be as damaging as delta ( that’s the theory?!) but it’s impact is overwhelming in other ways

From Saturday morning, France is banning travel to and from the UK without "compelling reasons".

Those reasons do not include travel for tourism and business, Paris said.

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said hauliers will not be affected.

"To confirm, I have liaised with my French counterpart, and hauliers will remain exempt," he tweeted.

French nationals and their spouses are also unaffected by the new rules.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a EU wide ban in the near future. How they think this will control the spread of Omicron is anyone's guess.

Not about controlling the spread, it's about minimising the rate at which it spreads to avoid overwhelming the health services.
