Curtiss One: American firm open order book for £87k electric model
https://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/new ... motorbike/
Curtiss Motorcycles have started taking orders for their first electric bike, which is called the One. The Curtiss brand was born back in 2015 as an electric venture for the very much petrol-driven Confederate Motorcycles.
There have been several concepts between then and now, including the 'electric V8-powered' Zeus 8 and the Hades, which took design inspiration from a handgun. But the One is the first model you can actually buy, if you’ve got a spare $115,000 (around £87,000).
The bike has a similar silhouette to previous concepts, all of which take inspiration from Glenn Curtiss’ V8-powered land-speed bikes from the early 1900s. The frame is long and low with an adjustable headstock that allows for a rake angle that can be adjusted between 27 and 31 degrees.
Adjustability is the word of the day, as the One also has 19 footpeg positions for the rider and 8 for the passenger.
So, what about performance? Well Curtiss claim the finished bike will weigh just shy of 193kg and have a power output equivalent to around 108bhp with 147.5lb.ft of torque. But with a future software update, they reckon that power figure will be boosted to around 214bhp – more than most superbikes can manage.
To add credence to these performance claims, Curtiss have also disclosed where the powertrain technology has come from. The bike’s axial-flux motor, for example, comes from British firm Yasa, who have supplied tech to lots of manufacturers and are a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz.

Eye bleach time.

If I won one I'd ride it.
(If there was a cash option though, I'd rather have that).

Too much adjustability, I'd give up on it before getting it right.

It's a 'collector's' vehicle - for businesses to buy as tax write offs and display in the reception area.

The rider and passenger on the tank appear to be very good friends!

One important figure missing. Range.
With 200hp and under 200kg, current battery technology will take it about 200 metres!

It's in there, 120 miles round town and 70 out of town. Enough to get you far enough to realise you don't like the last set of adjustments. The Spin Doctor wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 7:53 pm One important figure missing. Range.

I simply don't believe the claim for power vs range vs size of battery.Mussels wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 10:22 pmIt's in there, 120 miles round town and 70 out of town. It's energy density. With what battery tech is available at the moment, there's no way to hold enough energy to carry the bike that distance using anything like the peak power. You could wedge a huge battery in, but then it wouldn't weigh under 200kg even with the most exotic materials for the chassis.
I know that we don't use anything like 200 hp - or even 100 hp. To cruise at 60 mph on the flat and on a calm day we're using about 10 hp. I know a lot of people struggle to believe that but there was an excellent Performing Berks article some years back where they strapped a datalogger on to a GXSR600 and sent four of their journos out to see how much power they were using and it would be a bit of an eye opener for most people I suspect.
But if a 200 kg Zero with around 60 hp struggles to get 100 miles of mixed riding on a charge (my guestimate based on my own test ride was that the SR-Z would be running on the electrical equivalent of fumes after about 90 miles) then even with the most aggressive regenerative braking set up it's going to be very difficult to beat that if the rider starts using the power to generate the performance.
There are plenty of claims that improved batteries are around the corner, and there are research projects which are giving solid results, but they are some way from being production items.

I agree, real world range will be significanlty shorter if it's cold, wet, hot, dark or ridden like a normal person rides.
