French cars were my favorites for years, mainly cos I could sell them easily. The Citroen Xantia was, well, still is, one of my favorite family hatchbacks of all time. Something about the ergonomics that I just found so comfortable. But in later years they seem to have lost something with an appalling amount of problems? I hear they have upped their game in the reliability worked in recent years though? Also, they seem to have got as garish as Jap cars with their dashboards?
The 406 was the most comfortable car I'd owned (until the SL), but nothing electrical worked in it. It was the 2l petrol used in the Xantia.
Agree I ran ran a 406 for a year or so on the commute run, comfiest seats and ride by far. Probably even better than the wife's current Ovlov
Did also have a Xantia for similar purpose, not quite as good.
Still waiting for Nissan to get the parts in... Well, i assume so as they've not called yet... Admittedly it was only 4pm on Tues that all this was decided so they've not exactly had a lifetime yet. Car drove fine and without the light yesterday, so maybe they either cleared the code or gave the valve a bit of a wiggle to loosen it up.
Must admit though it's all taken the shine off the new purchase
Mine was the MK1 406, because the central locking didn't work from the key (actually it did work, but only twice in the two years I had it), you had to disable the immobiliser using a flip down key pad which made you feel a bit like James Bond in a Q special car.
It was very quick in a straight line (140mph iirc), but the suspension was so soft that when you floored it the front end would lift a foot and the tires would just spin.
You said one of the Cons was no DAB. I put a JVC head unit in the merc with Apple carplay (theres a non apple version), DAB, etc. It completely bought the SLK up to date. I've got Spotify, phone, Google Maps, hands free messaging with Siri. It was a few hundred quid but worth every penny.
Highly recommended.

Looked when i first bought it but struggled to find anything that still kept the reversing camera working and allowed DAB etc. It's not a massive isssue, i just need to rearrange the Spotify stuff on the phone instead really. I googled a bit of using the phone through it for internet radio.
In general, an hour of listening to a radio station from your phone uses around 60MB. This is because connecting to a 128kbps stream uses around 1MB per minute
60mb per hour isn't massive and i think i get 6Gb of data per month on the phone, so i guess i could just stream it.

Look at it this way, it would have gone at some point, so you're getting it out of the way now and not paying for it either! Win!

My 406 was a 96. I remember fitting those rubber thing's to stop the rear springs squashing.
My 406 broke the 200k mark when we were away in the UK on a 1500 mile round trip. It didn't miss a beat.
Looks like shit because I've just assumed for the last 4 years (when it tried to die on me, so I glued a core plug back in) that it was only worth running on a shoestring. And the AC compressor died - I'm not paying 1k+ to fix, there -are- windows after all.
Comfortable enough. I'd have another, newer, one in a heartbeat. Proper cheap forgettabowdit motoring. Some parts are becoming inexplicably discontinued (like the brake servo)

Well yes, but again there's budget to consider. £8k was max self designated maximum, you don't get a nice van for £8k.
Plus a nice van is only a nice van 10 days a year, the rest of the time it's a loud, expensive, rattly, van

Acksherly, you could consider hiring a decent van for the bulk of the season. A top $ Crafter is £370/month so something smaller (Caddy?) from an independent, for a 6 months+ hire you could get a big slab off that. No service costs etc etc. Probably won't help with the mud, grass and ruts though unless they do 4*4s....which you already have.
(Just had a look at 2nd hand VW Transporter Combis....the prices are ).
