Years ago a mate lived in a rented place where you could get into the garage via a (fireproof) door in the kitchen. It seemed to be 'a thing' for houses built around a certain time.

Looked at some new houses in Canada - all had access to the garage from within the house.

Seems like an obvious

I reckon I'd get 10 times the use out of the garage if I didn't have to go outside (whatever the weather) to get into it. Contemplating knocking through and putting a door in. :hmmm:
My garage is across the street (I'm lucky it's as close as that, France is weird) and it annoys me that when I'm working on a project in the house I spend most of my day going in and out of doors, often in the rain, locking and unlocking. So an integrated garage with interconnecting door would be great.

However -
- a garage is for hiding in!
- and making noise and smells in
- and inconvenient enough so that everyone else doesn't just open the door and kick their crap in

So, really you need at least two garages.

Be wary of:
- floor level; you don't want a fuel leak continuing on into the kitchen (probably a buildings control thing that surveyor would pick up when you sell)
- security; reinforce the outer door too - otherwise you let the crim in and then provide him tools to attack the door to the kitchen

Obvious solution is a separate free standing garage with proper heat, light, plumbing etc.

So basically a second house then :D

My mate bought himself a unit on an industrial estate. Paid about 80k for it, but it has it's own kitchenette, toilet, etc. Room for 4 cars even with the racking up one wall.
It's a proper geek-haven: remote control aeroplanes hanging from the ceiling, vintage framed motoring posters on the walls, etc.
Slap bang in the middle is his Frazer-Nash surrounded by many 70's /80's twin shock crossers. All rebuilt meticulously. He even bought an old industrial sewing machine to do the upholstery when it needed doing. Proper clever bloke.

Mind, if you ever met his missus, you'd understand why he needs a hideaway.

Next step on ...

Guy I knew in NZ had a place on a business estate. Similar to as you describe, with a full flat upstairs.

I could get a decent unit at a reasonable rent on a local farm development (I know a few that have eg to keep and work on their RV) but the main gripe is when doing DIY...

Y'know, I'll just cut these to size with the circular saw. Out we go, get set up. Ah...forgot the...trot back in...trot back out again, do the cutting, trot back in again (always seems to be raining).

Or, I'll just fix that xyz, now where's the drill*/soldering iron*/box of electrical fittings? In the :angry-cussingblack: garage.

I've got a decent insulated, most mod-cons shed/cabin at the bottom of the garden too and in the end I bought some duplicate tools (just the cheaper stuff) because wherever I was, what I needed wasn't. :D

Some of those old industrial sewing machines are brilliant bits of engineering, I'd quite like one and have a go at upholstery*. (As a result of a number of coincidences, family, regional, vac jobs I can use sewing machines/overlockers/make clothes. Can't use a needle and thread for toffee but I can make a nicely fitted, lined waistcoat, with pockets - real or dummy etc  ).

* Or just because they're really nicely made and v 'clever' things. :D

I've seen a few places and websites where they use the USA calendar. Fuck off. It might be trendy, but Fuck off.

When you see 11/09/21 it should mean one thing. But some trendy tosser programmer decides he knows best.

I could do, but what do I do with the chest freezer that's below them?

Bury the body, and leave the freezer in the front yard :D

Americans also can't use the 24 hour clock. They just can't do it. They call it military time - like it's difficult or an effing secret that only GI Joe can work out.

That said, MM/DD/YYYY always rattles my poor little British brain.

Yeah why do they always bang on about November 9th. In fact there you go, I'm being American right there without even meaning to. Yanks would say "November 9" wouldn't they, whereas Brits would say "The 9th of November". I wonder which came first, the manner of speaking or the date foramt.

Adobe signatures are always YYYY/MM/DD, for some reason I have to think really hard when reading that :D

Obviously YYYY/MM/DD is best because it's most easily orderable

Bloody macbook apple crap :(

It goes like this

Download a document
Want to add document to an email
Look for document, handily Apple have a section on my computer called "recents". It's not there!!

Probably my fault, who'd have thought a document I downloaded 5 seconds ago should be available in the file called Recents, maybe there's another file called "in the last 10 fucking seconds" that I can't find !

My point is, that as "recents" clearly doesn't work, why bother having it at all !

There's a file called downloads, but it only downloads into that file if you specify it. So that doesn't really work either !
