Stealth Omicron
A new version that a PCR test can't detect. I'm hoping this won't mess up my travel plans.

Re: Stealth Omicron
Does it matter when no one gets ill from Omicron, it's a bit of non virus.

Re: Stealth Omicron
It matters for travel. Mandatory PCR tests have been re-introduced for some travel now, I've got ferries booked to Ireland on 23rd of this month and Spain in early January, PCR tests for both.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 4:39 pm Does it matter when no one gets ill from Omicron, it's a bit of non virus.

Re: Stealth Omicron
It matters if it spreads because it doesn't show up in testing and people don't know they've got it, as it will spread faster and then you'll got a real incubator for new variants that may not be so benign. They're worrying now that this is different enough to be tagged as a new variant, so that's 3 on the go all of which appear to respond differently to the vaccine developed for the first one.
The scientists are worried so I guess they think it matters.

Mine too In that it's too difficult to have my nephew come to resort Constant testing for kids from the UK without full vaccinations. He won't have had his until after Christmas

Re: Stealth Omicron
Yeah, everything is booked and ready to go but the cost and availability of multiple PCRs on and around Christmas (plus the threat of increased restrictions meaning you may get stuck somewhere, or return and go into expensive quarantine) mean that it is rapidly becoming a no-goer.
Trying to be positive - it could be worse after all - but all this is getting pretty dull now.
When it comes to Omicron, my missus brought home a filthy 'cold' from the UK. I guess it could be COVID but it's not showing up on tests. Interestingly the couple of family members she was in contact with in the UK, and inevitably got it from, are also ill - similar not-very-like-covid symptoms, one tested +ve, the other didn't.

Yes, there's been a nasty chewing gum cold going around. Filly tested every day, not covid.

The only 'stealthy' aspect of it is that it is Omicron-like variant that isn't easily detected (though can be by genomic sequencing) as Omicron-like with the ready-reckoner they're using.
It is still detected by all the tests as 'Covid'.

I reckon it'll mutate until it kills us all, just like time does.

After delving into the article again I eventually spotted that. They could have made it a bit clearer! Shouldn't affect travel arrangements so for Pirhana.Kneerly Down wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 8:10 pmCount Steer wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 4:51 pm It matters if it spreads because it doesn't show up in testing and people don't know they've got it...It shows up on all the normal tests.gremlin wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 5:18 pmIf it can't be detected...Pirahna wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 4:34 pm A new version that a PCR test can't detect. I will admit to skimming over the article when I first read it. Still, it's the Internet, so I can be as alarmist as I like.Count Steer wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 8:45 pmAfter delving into the article again I eventually spotted that. Must admit I've not read much on it except a few SA doctors saying people seem less ill, but I didn't think we had proper evidence for that yet just a few anecdotes?Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 9:08 pm If no one has any symptoms and it does you no harm, how is it an illness?
I hope it's true. I'm a bit done with Covid now. Sadly it's not done with me what with 2 plague monkeys in my house

Makes other people get symptoms though...that's the problem. You're still a spreader. Typhoid Mary and all that.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 9:08 pm If no one has any symptoms and it does you no harm, how is it an illness?

Re: Stealth Omicron
If the symptoms are mild, you don't take time off work because you don't realise you've got it, you give it to more people who also don't take time off work and spread it to even more people.
Maybe this is the variant we've been waiting for: better than a vaccine. Maybe.

Re: Stealth Omicron
How can other people get symptoms if there aren't any, or if they're mild is it worth worrying about?Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Wed Dec 08, 2021 6:52 pmMakes other people get symptoms though...that's the problem.
