Recommend me a chain lube.

Chainsaw oil works for me,but I don't use the bike during salty roads weather.

It's what I use too. I understand it's not so good if you ride in the rain though.

That's true, I ruined a nearly new chain in a short period in that manner. Scottoiler loaded with chainsaw oil these days....

What ever I'm using because it's obviously the best thing ever, otherwise I might be a fool for buying such a big can of it, but not having tried hundreds of others I shouldn't really be commenting.

And how do people measure whether a chain lube is any good when they don't keep bikes long enough for the chains to wear?

Being dirty is what kills a chain. They're nominally fully sealed and self lubing so there is not a huge amount of extra lubrication required.

I'm currently using up old engine oil through the TUTORO, but after seeing that video about chain lubes, i'll go with ep80 after I've used up ols oil supplies, or for any future chain driven bikes I buy.

I use a light brushing of the nearest oil to me in the garage when I'm doing the job. Literally anything will do.

In the last 10 years I've used Castrol racing lube and 1 can of Wurth dry lube. Plus a bit with a Tutoro

The Wurth get's rave reviews but I found I couldn't tell how much was on the chain or when it needed redoing. At times it's totally dry by the time you've spun the chain...so did I do that bit or not? So I ended up using more and more often. I also found dust stuck to it quite badly so fair amount of cleaning needed. Hardly any fling even if you ride about 10 mins after applying.

So I went back to the Castrol which dries to the touch quickly but you can still see it's there. So less needed, less often. Dust sticks to that too though as like the Wurth it's a bit tacky. Hardly any fling even if you ride about 10 mins after applying.

Tutoro I just couldn't get on with. It was feast or famine. At 1/10 turn from closed (recommended is half turn open) it'd start flicking onto the business part of the tyre within 45 mins. But not lube the inner section of the chain enough at all. So the outer would be fine but the inner not. But then I'd have to turn it down as oil on the tyre isn't for me. I suspect at half a turn open the inner would have been fine but good knows what the back tyre would have looked like. Other's use these without issue so maybe the 690's vibes making it spit more out?? It works with vibration rather than like the Scottoilers.

So I'm back to Castrol. It's not perfect but the one I'm happiest with. No idea if it's better than others or not.

Fortnine did a test of all lubes and said EP80 gear oil was best. I'm guessing you get some fling with gear oil though?

I use used engine oil. I put the bike on an Abba stand, dip an old toothbrush in oil and run it over the chain, bottom, top and sides. If I want to make it look really nice I'll then go over the sides of the chain with a cloth.

Benefits of using old engine oil - it's free
The problem with using old engine oil - it splatters on the back wheel rim which isn't really a problem as it rubs off easy with a cloth.
