Methinks you miss the point. Masks don't protect surgeons, they protect patients. Masks don't protect you against Covid, they protect others if you have Covid, and by doing so they reduce the amount of Covid circulating that eventually will protect you.
That's not what he said...
Indeed and following on from @Cousin Jack thoughtful response, I actually said:

Yep it's just a numbers game really. A mask won't really protect you or anyone around you, it's effect is to slightly skew the probabilities of one infected person infecting another.

You need to adjust your autowrong settings for the Screwdriver alias. Those N95 masks do not filter out the virus, they are way too small for that. If you are breathing it out, people around you are breathing it in. There is no real protection to be had from the mask in isolation. Not for you or people around you.

The mask primarily stops mucus and sputum though as soon as you start to fiddle with it, your mere behaviour negates the entire purpose for wearing it. Oh and unlike the other five billion or so folk, I suppose you religiously dispose of your single use disposable mask after every use? Or do you shove it in your pocket like the rest of us and use it again and again...

A mask works as part of a systemic approach to reduce the rate of spread, largely carried by the vastly more contagious viral load carried in sputum or mucus which we deposit in the local environment. I often see people pull down their masks to speak; the exact circumstance when this minimal barrier is at it's peak potential to help reduce the spread of this virus.

The primary effect of a mask is to prevent droplets from persisting in the environment or contaminating surfaces which is why hand washing is (to the best of my knowledge) actually the more effective control method both for the person and the environment they may contaminate.

Masks, handwash and distancing combine to produce a net effect on a statistically significant population size. If you are in an enclosed space with a person infected with COVID a mask does not really protect you. The best protection is to get as far away as possible! If the carrier is wearing a mask, you rely on them not touching it (ever) and transmitting the virus by smearing it over surfaces you may also touch (apparently for up to 72 hours).

I am genuinely sorry if this casual remark has caused confusion though it would help if you were to question me further rather than jump straight in as you did.

Good grief that's a tricky bedtime read. I'm struggling with the meaning for those statistical analysis, the confidence intervals appear to be enormous?? Anyhow:

"However, transmission of SARS-CoV-2 largely arises in hospital settings in which full personal protective measures are in place, which suggests that when viral load is at its highest, even the best performing face masks might not provide adequate protection."

I bought mine from poundland some time ago, I'm not sure if they are the best performing masks either....

I might actually do that. It does appear my guesstimate of the various efficacies of COVID avoidance may even be correct in that handwashing appears to offer more effective protection than wearing a mask. But I need to brush up on the statistical methodology in that report, not my cup of tea.

I've completed my 2 day lateral flow test and sent the required photograph of the negative test result back to the supplier (Rainbow Labs). Apparently my certificate will be with me soon.

Anyone know how much a booster jab would affect a lateral flow test? A mate up here just did a positive lateral flow - the faintest of lines on the positive bit of the test - he had the booster the day before me

So now I feel I should do a test cos we have had coffee most days in a local restaurant (he used the NHS lateral flow test cos he brought a load back with him - I have a box too!!)

But, since I've only had the booster almost a week ago (well, tomorrow will be a week!) I'm wondering if that will have an affect on the result?

In a word, no, the vaccine does not affect the lft result.

Someone here sorted tickets for me to go see some friends. If I test positive in the next week I can't go. I might not leave the house between now and then, just in case (although with my luck I'll sodding catch it on the plane!!)

No one else we've seen has tested positive, only the one friend. But I've seen him more often than any of the others. Initially I'd hoped it was a friend that just came in from the uk (hope in that it would be nice to know where it came from!) but she's negative, as is the other friend that I see most days. So, Just have to keep hoping I stay negative for the next week!!

He siad he's going to isolate for now but keep testing - if he gets 2 negative in a row he'll reconsider. No symptoms, doesn't feel lousy. Just frustrating

And, thank you

Here's some good news for us. Until now Spanish could come and go as they please. They caused a few spikes last year.

Had my booster yesterday. Got the Pfizer this time as had AZ last time. Waited to post till today but feel OK at the moment and no idea if my WiFi has improved or not.

Although seems the new super mutant has arrived now so who knows if the booster does anything against that. Hard to get any proper info yet as all the news outlets have hit the panic button so I'll wait for Corporal Jones to restore order and check in a week or so.

This will fuck up the season for most companies if it doesn't change in the next two weeks , especially if France puts in similar restrictions :( :( :(

Can the travel companies redirect to Lyon? I'd think the ski companies will do everything they can to keep the season going (and it may all settle down before the snow really arrives). Fingers crossed.

There will be a lot already going to Lyon, Genoble, Chambery

GVA is generally a good choice as there is a lot less traffic problems (well, more options to avoid) so huge numbers do transit. Partly the flights are often cheaper and more frequent into GVA

Also, less companies that survived the initial shut down are doing travel and accommodation together because those were the companies that got the least support. So, apart from the bit ones, most are offering accommodation and contacts for transfers. Huge numbers have to book their own flights this year (in general the chartered went into French airports already)

I'm a smidge miffed as some friends chipped in for my birthday for flights and outfit to get to a party this coming weekend. So, availability and price means those flights are out of GVA. So I guess that isn't happening.

All of us up here just wanted a good, simple winter season. Still crossing fingers but with 2 weeks to go till the lifts open, it's not looking simple in the slightest :( :(

Flip-flopping back and forth is not going to endear him to the majority, who are about sick of it all now and just want some sort of normality back.
Oh I'm sure things will change - hopefully fast. Half of the issue is politics as much as health. But it doesn't decrease the stress for those of us that rely on winters for work, income, survival. If the Brits don't come, most of us won't work :( :(
