never owned an Elsie myself, rode a couple obs.

Yup. It was by a big roundabout on Thornton Road? The back of the site was close to Parry Lane and, on Fridays I used to get sent to the Parry Lane Chippy with the order then we'd collect everything and eat in the pub a few yards away with a pint or two...which was nice of the landlady to let us. Best fish n' chips and chip butties ever and the beer was

They had instrumented test bed engines so they could sample the pistons and test 'em to destruction or, more usually test new piston designs. They could have saved money and let the RTTL crew burn holes in the piston heads for testing.
