Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
Well this thread escalated LOL.
I don't really care if a car ACTUALLY gets 50mpg and it's advertised at 45 or 55.... It's just a rough comparison for me.
If the XC90 says combined is 30 and the Mondeo says it's combined is 55, then you can be safe in the assumption that the Mondeo is a fair bit more economical
tell you what though, for the clever people (or the Googlers)
Lets assume a combined of 30mpg over 13,000 miles in a given year with petrol at £1.45/l how much is that ?
and then assume a combined of 50 for the same 13,000 and same £1.45 how much is that ?
We can then get a rough idea how much difference it'll realistically cost if i were to swap to 'something'

The 30mpg car would cost £2859 in fuel for 13,000 miles. The 50mpg car would cost £1716.weeksy wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 1:08 pm Well this thread escalated LOL.

So basically we're at £1000 for the fuel difference and £500 for the tax .....Asian Boss wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 1:13 pmThe 30mpg car would cost £2859 in fuel for 13,000 miles. The 50mpg car would cost £1716.weeksy wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 1:08 pm Well this thread escalated LOL.

That's a LOT of change IMO.
Thanks for working it out matey.

WLTP is based on city driving so provides a decent estimate for average ICE cars, just don't believe it when used to work out electric cars range.

Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
Why does every petrol car I own do about 25mpg regardless of how big the car is or the engine size?

Only for low power stuff - anything with less than about 25bhp/tonne.Mussels wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 3:01 pm WLTP is based on city driving so provides a decent estimate for average ICE cars, just don't believe it when used to work out electric cars range.
Most road vehicles that you or I would buy do the Class 3 test which is intentionally split nearly 50/50 high and low speed. It tops out at about 80mph.
I'm sure that really matters for Weeksy's car buying

A guide to running costs through the lifetime of the vehicle? Are you having a 'hard of thinking' day?slowsider wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 12:51 pmWhat else would you be using them for?Horse wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 12:28 pmIIRC (and mr Dazzle will know more) these figures are obtained on a rolling road, following a set pattern. At best they are useful for comparisons.Wossname wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 12:12 pm
In a more general sense - I have always found the "combined" consumption figure to be nonsense if you want to know genuine fuel economy. The "urban" figure gives a much more realistic idea of what to expect day-to-day. Not sure how the new LGBT or whatever system compares. (OK, I found it - WLPT).![]()

Would that be so you could compare them to another vehicle's running costs?Horse wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 5:00 pmA guide to running costs through the lifetime of the vehicle? Are you having a 'hard of thinking' day?![]()

It could be, I think I may already have mentioned that. Are you having a hard of reading day too?slowsider wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 5:38 pmWould that be so you could compare them to another vehicle's running costs?
But you might want to predict whole-life costs for a single vehicle.

Whole life costs to contrast with another vehicle.Horse wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 5:41 pmIt could be, I think I may already have mentioned that. Are you having a hard of reading day too?

So other than comparisons, you'd use them for comparisons. Righto. Got it.

Not just multiple vehicles, it could be determining running costs for a single vehicle. Unless I've misunderstood what a 'comparison' involves? Obviously not got it.slowsider wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 5:45 pmWhole life costs to contrast with another vehicle.Horse wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 5:41 pmIt could be, I think I may already have mentioned that. No, but I've come to the conclusion I drive to how much I'm happy with spending on fuelslowsider wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 4:35 pmAre you flat to the mat most of the time?Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 3:04 pm Why does every petrol car I own do about 25mpg regardless of how big the car is or the engine size?

I tend to be tediously economical to 'bank' a bit for the the odd bit of making progress. The average works out okayLe_Fromage_Grande wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 5:56 pmNo, but I've come to the conclusion I drive to how much I'm happy with spending on fuelslowsider wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 4:35 pmAre you flat to the mat most of the time?Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 3:04 pm Why does every petrol car I own do about 25mpg regardless of how big the car is or the engine size?

Well quite - if this isn't a procurement calculation, I'm still waiting for you to explain why you would be doing that.Horse wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 5:51 pmNot just multiple vehicles, it could be determining running costs for a single vehicle. Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
Thing is, "people" who read that will assume that all 3 stats are equally authoritative, measurable and reliable. 213mm and £155 are; 40mpg is not - it's an artificial figure which gives no realistic idea of what you'll get. It's a theoretical figure which is only relevant as a comparator for other equally hypothetical figures. Is it any more practically useful than the old, pre-WLTM (whatever) ones?slowsider wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 11:00 am213mm ground clearance.
£155 tax https://www.parkers.co.uk/subaru/outbac ... 1/car-tax/
quoted 40 mpg combined.
Sorry for the derail....

Someone I know sells software for whole-life costs of all sorts of things. One item he mentioned was generators, used on remote sites. They could predict the whole life costs for running them - which includes knowing how much fuel it uses.
I only have one car. Knowing its typical mpg could allow me to predict likely fuel costs. One car, no comparison.

Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
Just get any of the small diesel SUV and fit some decent all season tyres. Something front wheel drive like a qashqai etc with it's better ground clearance will do the job and can be had with a 1.5 diesel and low road tax
