I hated the original, everyone did. It was designed by a blind man trying to tap into the 'other blind men who like the motoguzzi engine config but get the horn for a Honda' market. I always thought it looked like the rear end had been sat on by a very fat bloke and squashed it.

However I'm told the motors are 'ok'? There must be some reason these are used so frequently other than the slightly marmitey engine aesthetic?

Not everyone hated them.

Water cooled, shaft drive, easy to maintain, first production bike with tubeless tyres on. Didn't buy it for the looks. It was an ideal commuter and carried 2 (+ luggage when required) in some degree of comfort. Did 25k miles on it in the first year. (It was sole mode of transport). 2000 couriers can't be wrong.

Ok I wasn't clear (although I though the blind man analogy was ) - visually they're in the top 10 most nasty (looking) production bikes. I guess that's why you see so many makeovers - it's a great example of silk purse from sows ear.
The couriers also favoured the GT550 and the Bros (amongst others). I owned a Z550D1 (visually almost identical to the GT) and I still own a Bros and an NTV. So I really don't have a leg to stand on, on this subject.

Didn't the CX have some oddness with internal plastic water bottles or am I making that all up?

One of the reasons I bought a CX500 in 82 was the new-fangled tubeless tyres after far too many flats with tubed tyres. Going back to tubes is a step back to the dark ages for a road bike.
