Track / Floor pumps, do you care about accuracy of the gauge ?

Post by weeksy »

Or do you use something like a digital gauge instead afterwards ?

I got a Park Tool PFP8 and it’s OK… but was showing 20psi with my digital showing 32. From a squidge test, i’d be FAR more inclined to believe it’s 32 as it’s fairly hard.

So, do i send it back as the gauge is crap ? OR accept the gauge and just use a pump, it seems OK at being a pump.

I use a Topeak digital gauge.

I'm not really bothered about the actual figure, as long as the reading is consistent.

I've got an Oxford one that i think reads right

Using a squidge test i'd guess it's a damn sight more 30 than 20 as it stands anyway...

So i'll stick with that for the measuring of pressures.

Never worried about the track pump accuracy just as long as it's repeatable.

Different matter when it comes to the track bike, I use a separate gauge for that.

Looks like i'm keeping the Park Tools one then as i must admit it's very nicely put together.

Lenzyne for me. Seems pretty accurate against a calibrated gauge. Build quality is pretty good as well.

I’ve only got the track pump, dunno if it’s accurate I just pump up and squish test. 5-10psi makes no odds at my pace. I do add more pressure if I know there’s lots of tarmac like my commute.

Lezyne track pump with a Topeak head. The gauge on the pump is pretty good but like any pump it lacks any detail, I can get to within a couple of PSI of whatever pressure then use a Topeak digital gauge.

Track pump and roadbike here.
Err, pump it to about 110psi on the guage, give it a squeeze and ride it.

Guess if I was offroad I'd be more bothered about different pressures for differing conditions but I'm not, plus I'm shite so there's bigger fish to fry.

I've got a topeak Pressure gauge that can switch between presta and schrader valves, the gauge on the track pump and the one on my compressor's inflator head are way out in comparison
