Mr. Dazzle wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 10:25 am I reckon you might like Huygens Optics on youtube. Dutch guy, formerly of Philips I think, making various lenses, telescopes and similar sorts of things at home. Yesterday I watched him making OLED displays in his garage.

He also went to see another guy who made a proper telescope from a single block of glass about the size of a shot glass for use in a cubesat.
Good call on that one, just watched and enjoyed the one about the small cubesat lens.
You might like Tech Ingredients which covers a lot about composites, flat speakers, rockets and all sorts of other stuff.
The bloke takes the piss slightly and seems to get a kick out of being thought of as a boffin.

Another vote for Youtube, I've watched the TV stuff and will still dip in occasionally but on YT:
Binky (think someone on Rev Counter originally recommended it).
Retropowercars. Binky quality rebuilds on a large scale, rebuilt a MK1 Escort for Gordon Murry
Allen Millyard. V10 Dodge Viper Motorcycle or Inline 6 Z900 built with a hacksaw
Out of the Woods, bloke cutting wood with a big beard and southern US accent.
Maximus iron thumper. West country bloke with a beard and pony tail, self sufficent small holding, rebuiding Landrovers, tractors lorries and stuff.
Urchfab, Bloke with a plasma cutter make stuff for cars and bikes.
Colinfurze. Silly stuff like a 360 swing, drift trike and things with bike engines
Tod's Workshop Makes medeval weapons and then tests them.

I really really enjoyed a series by a guy called Ben Eater on making a computer. It's a few hours total watch, couple of dozen episodes I think, but he builds an entire functioning programmable computer on breadboards. Starts with making the clock and finishes with a whole computer.

I found it fascinating...despite having an entire family of IT nerds I'd not ever got to the bottom of how a computer actually works, beyond "it starts with an OS". It's doubly annoying actually, cause my Dad also built breadboard computers back in the early 80s but he doesn't have a YouTube channel to explain it :D

Really enjoying Fantomworks. The boss man Dan really is into 'full on restoration' with no corners cut, no jobs missed and full on detail. I can't imagine how much his work costs... but it's very effective.

On a slightly related note, me and @Welsh Muffin were talking last night as she was saying how tired she was. Mostly due to to meetings, calls, conference calls, planning etc in her job. I was saying how chaotic mine has been lately with the various installations/projects we're doing
"well all you do is press a few buttons every now and again" was her reply.... "yes but it's knowing what buttons and when dear" was my reply.
"well it can't be that hard, it's just buttons..."

Oh, ermmmm sure.... LOL thinks me...

Britannia Restorations on YT - takes really knackered Land rovers and rebuilds them - bit repetitive after a while but fascinating detail.
and a second vote for maximus Ironthumper -
Dangar Marine - re purposing an old trawler

I've got two ERP projects running side by side. Implementing a WMS and a CRM integration with SAP. It's surprisingly draining. Especially when combined with the amount of posting I do on here!

It's the old story. Printing press broken down, owner rings the manufacturer who send out a bloke to fix it. A quick look and out comes the big hammer and a whack has the press up & running again. The fitter produces a bill for £1,000. "I could have hit it with a hammer" says aggrieved press owner. "Look at the invoice" says the fitter. Two lines: For hitting press with hammer: £0.50. For knowing where to hit it: £999.50".

I'm watching a lot of M539 restoration on you tube. Fixing late 90s and early 2000s BMWs, not something I'd usually watch but the person fixing them is quite engaging.

Can't abide the programs that over dramatise working on cars or bikes, have a boss who seems to do fuck all except be on camera, have one token attractive woman, build cars/bikes for rich people who 'have people to do stuff for them'... so basically nearly all of them. I used to like the earlier wheeler dealers as their projects seemed within reach and I learned stuff but the rest of it is for people who want to watch, not do.

Edd China's workshop diaries. Like early wheeler dealers without the car dealer nonsense

I just sat and watched this.

Completely random suggestion on youtube, I've not watched any of the other episodes. The wife was watching Deadenders, so I had the volume off and the subtitles on, but I really enjoyed it. I want his torque wrench and yes he got me on the belts too!

Cars and bikes are what i like to watch. I even like Henry Cole! The thing that gets me is the constant recaps and dumb faux rock music. It gets very irritating. Worse yet is even Henry has started to adopt this production style.

I dropped my subscription to Discovery etc and tbh I've not missed Rawlings et al. I did like CCC though, that was a good alternative to the other ones. So now I too find random stuff on youtube...

Forgot about Paul Brodie.
He does some pushbike stuff and repairs/improvements to older motorbikes as well.
He's got a good delivery with zero crap and drama.
I like him anyway.

Sadly seems to be going down the road of 2 mates joshing each other. A shame as he is a gifted person and when left to his own devices has done some very interesting things. I wonder whether the current format was his idea or foisted on him by the programme producers.

Found some more of this series... it's really enjoyable and it does highlight how society has changed,.... Can you imagine taking whatever you're got on your driveway and still owning it in 40-50 years ? Then restoring it and being happy?

I guess a lot of it would come down to UK salting/gritting that would stop most of the UK based cars from being worthwhile.
