There is an implicit distinction in your comment that you may not have intended: what about those who died in wars and conflicts which weren't 'to defend our freedom' but to maintain the imperial status quo?
They are included in the collective memorial. The narrative is almost unassailable.

It is odd how those who whine about it are those who would have not been allowed to live had the conclusion of 1945 not gone the allies way.

Haven’t clicked on the above links and have no intention of doing so, but just wanted to put this up for those who might be interested.
My great Uncle James, enlisted at 14, KIA at Guillemont, aged 15.
His Mother’s letters to the Army pleading to have him sent home, (having lied about his age to enlist), went unheeded.
He has the dubious honour of being the youngest member of the 17th Battalion King’s Liverpool Regiment ( Liverpool Pals) to be killed in action and regardless of political or military views I hope you’ll agree it particularly tragic that boys this age where caught up in such a unimaginably horrific situation.
As always on this day our thoughts are with him and everyone else who have lost their lives in conflicts around the world.

It's amazing when i think he's only 20 months or so older than my lad... If i were to imagine that in 20 months he'd go to war etc, well it's just unthinkable...

I personally don't think i'd have been able to cut the mustard and i'd have been cowering at the thought of it, let alone stand up and fight.

Grandpa Ming on my mothers side joined the queue at the Navy enlistment office at 15, when he got to the front of the queue the Officer rejected him as being to young so he went to the back of the queue, a few minutes later he was in front of the same officer with a different DOB and the Officer looked at him, shook his hand and said welcome to the Navy. He was assigned to HMS Wolf a lend lease ship that was a submarine depot ship. A whole deck had all its bulkheads cutout for a huge machineshop, it was FULL of white asbestos and he slept in the ratings quarters right over the torpedo store. The boat was so shonky that whilst it was in dry dock having the barnacles removed with wooden tipped steam chisels they peppered the hull with holes. They joked they wouldn’t make it past the bay of biscay without sinking but got to Ceylon as a floating bomb (dozens of torpedoes in a tin plate box). He survived the war to be killed by the NHS and lung cancer in the 1980’s

Grandma Mings first boyfriend was an American aviator she was engaged to and he was shot down over Arnenham during operation Market Garden.

I should also mention Grandma Ming was a WAF in charge of barrage balloons, one night in stormy weather they were attempting to tether down their balloon and she went inside it to attach additional lines when it broke free, she went a long way up before falling out and landing on a concrete block tether anchor, she spent a year in plaster for a broken back from the neck down having her fingers slit to relive pressure build up and other unmentionables. She was as hard as nails and never complained.
