2016 KTM690 ABS Fault diagnosis

Post by Jody »

When I start my bike the dash tells me I have an ABS fault, the ABS light stays on for a short while too and I ride off into the distance :bblonde:

I would like to see if I can fix the fault but don't really know where to start. I can't find any info online for what might be the issue, how to diagnose and what to try !

I figured I'd ask in here instead

What can I do to diagnose the fault, is cleaning up sensors and rings likely to yield any results?

The light will stay on for a few meters until it's sure it's getting a speed reading from both wheel sensors.

Does the dash ALWAYS say "ABS fault" then?

Ah, then no.

Can you do a video ?

Mine used to come up with MTC failure on startup from cold... Which was down to the battery being not good enough.

The ABS you've got 2 sensors, 1 on the front fork leg and 1 by the rear caliper. Remove, clean them and clean the ABS rings too. Check the wiring from them all the way up, see if it's split/broken. Were you getting this before ? is it since you got the Litihum battery ?

Previous owner may have disconnected/disabled it? Some people hate ABS on bikes with a vengeance.

I'll do a video when I get it back next week.
My Battery isn't amazing but seems OK, but I did see some utube vids about ABS probs on BMW's being caused by low battery !
I'll give the sensors and rings a clean as you suggest.
It was like this when I picked it up. I haven't changed the battery

Possible but unlikely as it's possible to turn the ABS off on the dash !

Ah. On mine I think you had to turn it off (which was a minor palaver) every time you switched the bikes on and some people got a bit :( about it.

My ABS light comes on when the bike starts and then goes out when you ride. Might doesn't have an error message though, just the ABS light. But I also have the older dash.

My dash flashed up an error code several times when the battery was on it's way out. But it was an ECU fault code. New battery cleared it.

An ABS light should come on upon start up, and go out when the fairies shut the magic starty stuff off.

Having got my bike back from the shop after he fitted new fork seals and smaller front sprocket, I thought I'd best make a little video of what the dash shows......

But it's stopped doing it!!

Maybe the tech disturbed the ABS sensor when he took it all apart and inadvertently fixed the problem but I don't know. I do know I feel better about the £200 for labour.

Bars ends and axle sliders hopefully fitted today, if the weather calms down a bit !

Does the ABS indicator come on at start up then go off or does it just not come on at all? Maybe something disturbed some grot on the sensor when doing the forks?

The light on the dash still comes on with the ignition. The dashboard no longer displays ABS FAULT.

Faults that go away on their own are always the best ones!
