I've converted, or given a final push to, four people now amounting to the best part of £20k's worth of bikes being bought.

Latest one today - although not a full conversion as he was already on a Carrera POS emtb - was complaining about how crap his current bike was while were at Black Rocks. I asked him if he'd thought about getting a decent bike. Oh yes, he says, I almost bought a whyte this week but didn't like the sellers attitude when I spoke to him on the phone.

Have you been to Stanley Fearns (the LBS that was about 1 mile away as the crow flies from where we were riding) and had a look at what they've got in stock and spoken to them? I ask.

No, says he.

So I pretty much frog marched him down there....

...and he's bought an e160-rs...

When at my LBS recently informed me categorically that one of their boutique brands are definitely not announcing a E-Bike shortly. They stock Santa Cruz, Evil and Ibis.

When asked if it was Evil there were a lot of women in the staff

I would be willing to bet that if you came to the Peaks and hired an emtb and came for a ride with me you'd have worked as hard as you would have done on one of your normal rides on an Amish bike.

A mate came up during the summer and hired one. Now he's fit, as in he does 100 mile road rides and runs half and full marathons for fun, but he was broken after getting 3/4's of the way round one of the less challenging routes.

Every time I’ve taken Mrs M’s Levo out I’ve spanked myself (it’s left in Turbo and I just don’t stop pedalling). I usually end up with the same peak HR but the av is normally 10bpm higher than normal.

I don’t think there’s any doubt you get the same workout on an emtb, the only doubt is from those that have one and use it in the same routes and at the same speed as their normal bike. I think even our leader here had to concede they can be hard work

And when you have to lift a 25kg eMTB instead of a 15kg MTB over an obstacle it's then you get buyers remorse.

I transport my emtb on a bike rack attached to the back of my Vito, the rails are at chest height and lifting 25kg up onto them is not an issue

It’s never been an issue tbh, there are no negatives. Ive ridden routes a normal bike would have to be carried and ridden steeper than a normal bike. I’ve gone faster than a normal bike can and get the same workout from an ebike but I get speed as the reward

I ride a mtb with my wife and she also rides with her pals (she also has a Trek Fuel EX). Don't see her lifting a 25kg eMTB over obstacles tbh.

I agree I’m helping the environment, I’ve used the ebike for 50% of my commutes this year saving 1500 miles of diesel use, I’ve also done a fair few of the remainder in the leccy car

Whilst I can see it’s an issue for your good wife I’m not sure it’s a reason for me not to own one

Tbh I love the extra speed I get for my efforts that’s really as simple as it gets
