I'd say the Honda CB400F was pretty iconic, despite the fact that it wasn't that successful at the time - which is surprising. Pretty collectable now though.

My Honda 400 was "snug" when I was 17. I imagine that aged 37 it'd be more "crippling" .

I was 'comfortable' on the ZXR400, but that was before the belly arrived. Now I'd hate it (mainly due to back/neck discomfort, which is probably caused by doing 12 years/54,000 miles on the ZXR!! ).

But the ZXR, and my Mum's CBR400RRSP were incredibly fun bikes to ride, genuinely involving and you got out of them what you put in, which could be very very satisfying.

I rode a 400 before I got my first bike. TBH, no idea which one. I liked it ok, but I was a novice. The reason I got a 600 to start with was I didn't fit on the 400!! LOL

I've spent most of my biking time on litre plus bikes. But, I had the MOST FUN EVER when I had the 390 Duke. On the road and on track!! Once I've got my confidence and bottle back, I reckon the dinky Monster will be almost as much fun. And the first bike I've ever had that I can get both feet flat on the ground - even the 390 was a tiptoe job!! LOL

I do still love the idea of a big bike, but now I've played with a dinky toy, I can understand why people rave about small bikes

The JDM 400s made in the 90s were very high quality, much better than the 600s, which were all do everything bikes, my FZR was like a miniature OW01, the GK76 GSXR400 is the best GSXR I've ridden, including the SRAD and K2 750s I had, the Honda NC30 handles incredibly, all of them are very good to ride, have enough power to be fun, but are never over powered.

It helps to be physically small to get the most out of one, as they're tiny and cramped, I'm no longer physically small and it was too uncomfortable for a 20 minute track session.

The NC30 official UK bike was well over 6 grand back in the early 90s, only grey imports meant the proletariat could get one. In Japan they were literally dumping 400cc bikes on the street they were so common.

I like small bikes again now I'm actually able to ride th without significant pain. I'm actually enjoying hooning about on my R125 so much the big bikes haven't moved in ages.

Thing is Yoz, you have slowed down, it's just you haven't slowed down enough for it to be an issue, time catches up with everyone, that's why there's no 50yo riders in MotoGP. I know for a fact that I can get from a to b quicker on my BMW that I could 20 years ago, but of it was on an old GSXR1100 like I rode then, no chance. Nobody beats Father Time.

I like having a fast bike, but I've nowhere to use it without the risk of putting it in a hedge or ending up in court, having a licence is a pretty essential part of what I do for a living. I'd rather thrash the bollocks of something slow than ride about on something fast at half throttle.

My brother managed a dealership that imported a few containers of bikes from Japan every couple of months. Back then, most older bikes ended up crushed for scrap due to their "MOT" restrictions. Plus to ride anything over 400cc meant taking another test, insurance was high, and not many bikes over 400 could be bought anyway.

Opening each container was fun, as bikes were just piled in. There were only a few decent bikes in each, which they kept to sell on in their shop.
The rest, a mixture of scabby non runners, loose engines, frames, panels, etc.) they outed to the trade. It was lucrative business before everyone started to do it.

I was always struck by the sheer quality of them and wanted one, but back then I didn't have any money. I did buy a Gullarm Honda 400 in 2004, and absolutely hated it. Just had no proper feeling of power. All noise, not much go. Butit was a good looking bike.

About 4 years ago I bought an Aprilia RS250 which was a far, far better bike than the 400 ever was.

Small bikes are fun BUT not when doing 400 miles a day for a week.

FWIW, I thought the 916 was one of the most beautiful bikes id ever seen. When a Mate got one and I saw it up close I thought I've got to have one, even though I don't really like sportbikes, but, I wanted to own one. My mate said you'd hate it. It's deffo not for you. I took it out for a ride and within a hundred yards I knew he was right! I went round the block and gave it back.

Same with the imported Honda 400 I rode. I thought it was noise and no go and gave it straight back. I suspect both bikes would be very good in the right environment, but I don't ride where they'd do well. I have secretly always wanted a 400 four with the snakey 4-1 exhaust thing, but i'l probably never own one...

I was just making the point TP, that whatever you like/ride someone will tell you it's rubbish because they don't like them. Been, there, done that with BMWs
Once, if it wasn't a sports 600, it was rubbish, now, if it's not 1000cc+ it's rubbish etc etc. Whereas, really, if you like what you ride, it's the perfect bike (and you can even like other things but not want to own them ). Mind you, if it's a café racer with holes in the side........
