Weighted handle bars ends in Aluminium ?

Post by Jody »

My 690 came with one of the handlebar ends missing, I do have a brand new set of ally end caps, but as I've already noticed my Carpal Tunnel playing up I'm thinking properly weighted ones are the way to go!

However, a quick look at Ebay reveals that 'proper' companies like Oxford and Schnide companies from China all make their bar ends out of ally, even ones specifically listed as being weighted. How can you make a weighted product from a light weight material ?

Heavier than plastic I suppose! Maybe it's got stuff inside?

All aluminum is the same density, give or take, so its not like they can claim they're using a particularly dense kind.

Why not just get standard ones? Or so they not fit the bars?

£21.60 EACH plus extra for the fastening bolt. Just seems excessive IMO !

I bought some for my previous GSXR. They had lead in. Heavy as fuck. Damped out all vibration.

10 points to the first person who suggests rolling up a sheet of roofing lead and sticking it inside. I'd have to look up where you can even buy roofing lead these days!

You don't need to buy it. ;)

Lead shot up the bars is another possibility.

BTW Jody,I have an old set of ZX9R bar ends in the garage. The retaining bolt is M8 x 35.

You are welcome to them if they are of any use.

OMG, I'm living in my camper at a mates place where he's doing a barn conversion, there's literally 3 rolls of lead in the barn......

Very kind offer, do you know what size bar they are designed for ? My bars are 28.2 O/D and I think 22mm I/D.

The bar end weight has to be the correct weight to balance the vibs - that'll depend on the length of the bar from the clamp, as well as the vibration created by the engine, I'd have thought.

Tuned mass damper anyone?

Bars ends aren't as sophisticated as that...but there could indeed be something in getting the mass just right. You wanna tune the bar's natural frequency to be well away from the engine speed.

I doubt any think it about that hard.

Could put the heaviest part at various points in the bar tube to see how it affects the resonant frequency I guess. Likely the kind of thing raceteams do in an effort to maximise effectiveness whilst minimising weight and everyone else just bolts stuff on til something works.

There's a section on some of this in The Racing Motorcycle, A Technical guide for constructors book I have but from memory it was more about frame tube resonant length.

Thanks for the offer, my new bars have just turned up and at the end they are 22mm / 14mm so yours won't fit.

I ride a GSA - you’d need one of those pendulums from a skyscraper to tune out the vibrations.
