New tourer using the 1100 lump used in the @ and the CMX.

Considering it's being launched on the 21st, there's very few pictures. Lots of artist impressions that make it look like an @ for short people.

As an aside, I am seriously questioning the need for humungous tourers. Most of today's ride was on fast twisties, other people could and would ride quicker than me, but that is down to appetite for risk (aka bigger balls), my little 500 was fast enough to frighten me. Nothing passed me. On the fast dual carriageway coming home it was out in the outside lane at 90-95 playing with the big boys. All while doing 83 mpg.

You ain't gonna get 2 people and luggage on a 500, I tried a Deauville with Mrs Jawa on the back and it was utterly crap, just didn't have the grunt. This is why we have the Pan. Plus when conditions and lack of plod allow, it'll sit comfortably at 110-120.

How are you going to carry a pillion as well as panniers?

Are they going to have to wrap their legs round the riders waist?

You ain't gonna get 2 people and luggage on a 500, I tried a Deauville with Mrs Jawa on the back and it was utterly crap, just didn't have the grunt. This is why we have the Pan. Plus when conditions and lack of plod allow, it'll sit comfortably at 110-120.

I toured all over Europe two-up with camping gear on a CX500, and it was perfect. Cruised at 80-odd. Overtaking just needed the gearbox.

I've just done 1000 miles in five days two up on my XJ6. No problems, apart from the seat not being as comfortable as the old Honda. It'll hit 100 two-up without any problem, but where could I have ridden it at that speed between NW London and Pembroke?

How on earth did people manage to live with motorcycles that made less than 100hp in the past?

Maybe and as long as you are happy with that it's fine, but I and many more I'm sure prefer to ride a bike two up touring where you barely notice you are loaded up - which is where the big tourers excel.

I did a Fronch tour two up on a 700 Alp. It was OK. Next time I took a 1000 Varadero, it was loads better

Yes, perhaps 2 + people luggage would be a stretch too far, and no, it won't cruise at those speeds. My old VFR would, but on my last big tour I spent perhaps a couple of hours doing that, and countless hours on tight twisties. The little CB500F would eat your Pan for breakfast on those.

Horses for courses innit, I'm only little, most of my riding is on narrow twisty lanes, I don't carry a pillion. I do plan on another big European adventure though, and I reckon the 500 will cope well, What I lose on the fast roads I will make up on the twisties.

Recently rode my Deauville 650 to Czechia and back from south east Spain. Power was just adequate for me and minimal luggage. BUT i could ride 10 to 12 hours a day in comfort. Seat shape, fairing and riding position saw to that.

No problem doing this 5500 km trip again on it, but better on something with more poke. Can't imagine doing a long trip, with pillion andcamping gear (how frightful is camping?) on a CX500.

My mate did similar, touring Europe on a CB250 two up with camping gear. Mental nto do that now, but 40 odd years ago, there weren't the options there are now

I was happy with it, and I remain happy riding a reasonably light, reasonably nimble, reasonably modestly powered bike two up for a holiday.

What I took issue with was "You ain't gonna get 2 people and luggage on a 500". Of course you can, and back in Ye Olden Dayes there wasn't a choice about it. People toured all over the place on much less powerful bikes than riders think are 'essential' now.

Does 120 mph count as 'touring'? Not really. I can understand getting from A to B as rapidly as possible to extend holiday time and I have averaged silly speeds on the Autobahns to get to Austria in a day, but given the option I'd far rather take two or three and amble along down nice twisty roads.

Once you've got panniers, top box and tank bag there's not much difference in what you can carry on anything unless you're in the Wing/LT category. Some (all?) bikes have a stated load limit though and we did a trip to somewhere south of Clermont-Ferrand on the LT loaded to the limit.

(That was the trip I came closest to getting us both killed...but that's another story).

Back in the day when I started riding the most bad-ass bikes available were a Triumph 650 Bonneville or BSA 650 Super Rocket
The Bonneville made a claimed 46 bhp, the Road Rocket claimed 50bhp.

My Honda 500 makes 47, so I'm claiming bad ass credentials.

Seeing as my longest tour ever (4500miles) was by bicycle I couldn't agree with you more, I was just explaining why some people might prefer something more pokey than a cx500 for two up touring.

How 'pokey' do you need? I despatched all over the UK on a CB250RS - I had (I think) five of the beasts and clocked an average of 75k on them before they blew up. OK, sitting at a steady 65 on a motorway wasn't altogether 'fun' but they were terrific bikes for hooning round country lanes.

The CX coped perfectly well two-up and could mile-eat at 80+... which is pretty much as fast as you're allowed to ride anywhere bar some of the German motorway system, the Nordsleife and parts of the TT circuit... it carried two people and luggage with no problem at those speeds, and on ordinary roads had plenty of poke to overtake when I needed to - it was just a case of using the gearbox rather than twist the throttle.

If you make it all about the bike, you miss out on the point of touring... which is to visit new places. You might as well just ride up and down the M1!

Bikes are a personal choice and everyone can ride whatever they want. I just get frustrated when people dismiss smaller bikes without thinking.
