It doesn't smell cooked, so if it is the regulator, it's been undercharging? The battery is taking a charge with no hiccups?

What makes you say the battery is taking the charge? I'm not arguing it, but you've not shown us why that's the case?

Its on an optimate iv which checks it before charging, but it just took a charge straight away. Faulty regulators either under or overcharge. When they overcharge they boil the battery and you'll certainly smell it and the battery is hot to touch. I have none of that, so I expect the regulator is undercharging? Don't get me wrong, if it needs a battery, it can certainly have one, it just doesn't appear to need one.

I've seen loads laid up and optimate says "good to go" then nada.
People swear "it says it's fine"

They put on a new battery and it starts first press.

I'd be going multimeter to confirm rather than the optimate

All of that ^^ I dont even trust trickle charge over the winter months. I rather take battery out and keep it worm in the house and if needed charge come when needed again.

A multimeter won't test it, it'll just read the battery's voltage? The only real way to test a battery is a load tester, but I don't have one of those obvs. Regardless, I have to charge it to start it and check what the voltage across the terminals is. Then I'll know if it's the regulator, I just hope it isn't the alternator/stator. Not saying it isn't the battery of course, but it's very unusual to have run a bike for 45 minutes over 10 miles and it not start 5 minutes later?

The battery charged okay according to the optimate. Put it on and with the leads connected it was 12.8v. Ran the bike and the reading stayed the same. It isn't charging.

DMM will tell you the battery voltage, so charge the battery and if a cell has failed you’ll see a lower voltage than normal. Eg 9V rather than 13V on it once it comes off the charger.

But if it’s just beginning to fail, to properly test it you need a Hioki or Yuasa battery tester that measure the battery’s internal resistance ( but they are rather expensive - about 1K)

I grew up using the below! Whatever the battery state, it won't change the charge output rate at the terminals, or at least that's always been the defining diagnostic for me. Plus, these bikes are pretty notorious for reg faults. They get too hot behind the panels where the engine heat pretty much gets directed.

I congratulated myself pulling a bike battery back from the dead, rode into town, it cut out. No amount of bumping or jumping would restart it, it was a long push home again.

I congratulated myself pulling a bike battery back from the dead, rode into town, it cut out. No amount of bumping or jumping would restart it, it was a long push home again.

I'm a sucker for this, I hate throwing things away, so even though I know a battery is knackered I'll still try voodoo to make it last a bit longer. On a two stroke with kickstart I can get away with it indefinitely, but it's caught me out on other stuff, you can't bump start a boat.

I've had quite a bit of success reviving deeply discharged batteries, i.e. completely flat with zero voltage showing on a meter, but if a cells gone, it's over!
