Re: In todays news...
GB number plate sticker no longer valid abroad
British motorists driving outside the UK must now remove old-style GB stickers or cover them up.
Instead they should display a UK sticker or have the UK identifier on their number plate.
The UK government guidance has been in place since Tuesday 28 September.
The new rules state that any driver with a GB sticker on their car now needs to replace it with a new UK one if they are taking their vehicle abroad.
The GB sticker has been displayed on British drivers' cars for 111 years and been valid for cars from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
And before anyone starts frothing at the mouth about bloody European bureaucrats -
Probably won't make a huge amount of difference, but I thought you ought to know.

The move was only revealed by the United Nations which said it had received "a notification stating that the United Kingdom is changing the distinguishing sign that it had previously selected for display in international traffic on vehicles registered in the United Kingdom, from 'GB' to 'UK'".
Probably won't make a huge amount of difference, but I thought you ought to know.

And while I'm here - Brexit paves the way for gene-edited crops
The UK government is to relax the regulation of gene-edited crops to enable commercial growing in England.
The plants are to be tested and assessed in the same way as conventional new varieties.
The changes are possible because the UK no longer has to follow European Union regulations, which are the strictest in the world.
Welcome to genetically mutilated food.

They're not genetically modified, or mutilated, they're "Gene-edited crops, by contrast, often just have genes snipped out of them, producing new varieties within months that could also have been produced by traditional cross-breeding but over a period of several years."
I've got a spliced bougainvillea in my hallway, I'm not about to eat it, but neither am I worried about it morphing into a trifid.

When you have a spare 5 minutes, I'd move the bougainvilliea outside. There's no way I'd have those spikes in my house.

That's what they do. They can look lovely with great colours but they're nasty spiky things. I have one in my garden, a light purple and there's a yellow one, that's not in my garden that tries to prevent me from moving around as the gardeners only cut the bits in the communal areas. I hack it back regularly but then it's a bloody pain getting rid of the bits.

'Google' is most searched word on Bing, Google says
The top entry on Microsoft's Bing search engine is for its rival Google, Google has said.
The claim was made in court, as Google made its case to appeal against a €4.3bn ($5bn) fine from the European Union for abusing its market power.
The EU accused Google of using Android's success in the smartphone market to make Google the default search engine.
But Google says its service is simply the most popular.
Don't know the ins and outs of this but it did make me chuckle.

Re: In todays news...
I see your point, but if it was a bloke at the top they'd be demanding a woman be put in charge.
My friend was a DCI in the Met until retirement a couple of years back. His wife was a WPC for a good number of years. He's alluded to the view that in terms of progression in attitudes to women and ethnic minorities, nothing much has moved on in the last couple of decades with a hard core of officers.
He puts some of the blame with the brass and says one such incident prompted his decision to retire. He was asked to assist a new DCI in a case involving the murder of a serving police office (I'm vague on details intentionally). He duly did, said she was capable enough as SIO but clearly inexperienced, hence his mentoring on this very high profile case. During one break she mentioned that she was being fast-tracked to take her superintendent exam, the very exam my mate had been told he was unsuccessful in applying for some weeks earlier, having been held back for many years.
His view is that the more the Met tries to be progressive, the more the old timers push back and entrench their views more deeply, with added resentment.
