A government spokesman says there's no need to panic buy.

PANIC BUY, PANIC BUY.

OK, chaps, message received. We have taken all the diesel locally, now working on the petrol. Should be finished today.

I drove through Fort William yesterday, there was a queue back from Morrison's fuel station almost to the big roundabout, I'd guess at least 30 vehicles. The other three fuel stations in the town had no queue, and at least one of them had sufficient diesel left for me to fill my van's tank from half empty.

I filled up with DERV at Invergarry. No queue and cheaper than Fort William :)

Being as it's less use when empty than full, allowing that the rest of the van is functional as a moving vehicle, it's reasonable to me to see it as half empty.

If it was a cess pit that slowly fills I'd judge it on its degree of fullness.

A small survey for anyone who can be bothered: Among your friends and acquaintances how big is the Venn diagram overlap between those who are railing about the just in time delivery system and those who usually run their vehicles with a minimal amount of fuel in the tank?

Dunno, but I fill mine up when the fuel warning comes on then run it until the warning comes on again. :(
On the plus side, Guildford is having a 'car free' day today. Roads closed, stalls and all that. They must be psychic! So, hop on a Sunday bus and.....oh. :(

Then I'll take good enough photos of the duck to identify it as a new species.

7ft tall and poisonous.
Your van will not survive the impact.
If the van was crushed to half its size, would it then be full?

Does anyone know if we’re clapping the petrol station workers at 8pm?

Great news!

No need to panic buy fuel. No, that one (as Grant Shapps tells us) is no longer important.

Filly has gone to tesco for the weekly food shop - queue to get in the store.

Utter carnage outsider local Tesco Express this afternoon, they'd obviously had a fuel delivery and traffic was queuing in both directions and it was very unpleasant according to Mrs M.

It will start impacting our engineering work soon as its being reported that staff are struggling to find fuel to get too and from work and also work vans are beginning to run low. It will also start impacting my job as some of my colleagues have to commute by car and if they can't get to work then its single manning shifts, no day to day work allowed and dealing with emergencies only.

Mrs M has very little fuel in the car so we're saving that for emergency vet trips and she will be cancelling work visits to schools etc and working from home.

This is all getting VERY boring. Reading something on the Telegraph or Indie last night there is plenty of capacity and lorries available for normal use BUT since the panic started petrol stations are reporting 5 times the normal sales.

The panic can't last forever (he says!). People presumably aren't suddenly driving loads more, so once everyone is filled up they'll not have space to fill up again. So this is the peak, trough is to follow.

Unless Jerry cans are next on the list

I remember some idiot in the last petrol shortage (when the drivers went on strike) hoarding petrol in a wheely bin in the front room of his terraced house. The petrol "ate" the plastic and dumped the entire contents on the floor which then soaked through the floorboards into the void under the houses and resulted in the whole terrace being evacuated for days whilst the fumes dissipated. He was severely prosecuted.
