Dream garage bike No1 Yamaha MT-10

I just can't get past the looks, it looks like someone took a dull mid range bike and bolted the M&P catalogue onto it.
I'm sure it goes well, but why make it look like that? Get an Italian in to design it.

It's the looks I like. I can't even tell most bikes apart,especially sportsbikes, they've all blurred into each other, whereas that, well that I could pick out across a crowded 1000 bike showroom!

The 1290 Superduke is different in the context that it's just a rabid pitbull, no hidden bits, no niceness, just brutal.... but the MT-10 can sit there and be stroked gently.... or.... club baby seals to death

Fair comment, I agree with that, but you obviously have to like the looks to like it, IYSWIM.

I'm not a fan of sportsbikes. To me they look like kitchen cupboards with decals and wheels, but even I'd concede the 916 was indeed a thing of beauty!

I'm pleased i owned multiple 916s, along with a chunk of other Ducatis, however, i wouldn't really want another right now. The 916 was of course iconic and a game changer and a bloody incredible bike... That doesn't mean the MT10 isn't incredible though.

I wouldn't want a 916 now because the moment has passed, but it's that kind of thing I'm looking for, something that makes me sit up and go "wow".
I haven't seen a bike like that for a long time, the closest I came was my Dragster RC - but even that was no 916 or RC30.

Maybe motorbikes don't attract the cream of the crop of designers anymore, they're all off doing cars or boats.

I remember looking at pictures of the new R1 in 2009, specifically the white one in the on-track promo shots and thinking WOW!

It hasn't really aged very well and now it looks it bit porky and bulbus compared to modern superbikes.

To me they have fantastic suspension and a fairing to keep the weather at bay.

It was a nice looking bike and as soon as I saw my mates one I immediately put my order in, and you know the rest.

But no one will be looking back in 30yrs and calling it a step change, whereas even if you weren't born 30yrs ago you'd find it hard to say a 916 wasn't something very special.

I felt like back then every year really new and exciting stuff came out and then every few years something like a 916 or an RC30 or something else really special would pop out. Like I said, even the first blade, my mate came back in a right state after getting a go on the first demo one, he said it was like riding a space ship compared to his Exup - and in it's day the Exup was a tidy bike.

But you're never going to see that now because of technology. With data sharing, image leaking, designs from computers, you'll never get truly innovative designs now, they've all been done. New exhaust routing, new swingarms, etc... Something like the Niken is about the closest you'll get to it.

I think you're expecting/thinking of something that is impossible.

The MV was designed beautifully in every aspect, every bracket, every hose routing.

But what it also has is the fact you were able to know exactly which bloke built it, when, what he had for breakfast that day and what his mothers name was.. You had access to a level of exclusivity in motorbikes that's hard to find.

Agreed, my mate phoned the bloke that owns the company and they managed to find me one, recall it to the factory and then fly it here, but you could do that if you had a mate that knew Mr Yamaha.

I'm not knocking it, it was a really nice thing to do and to own when it got here, but like I keep saying, it was no RC30.

In terms of fundamental design there is little difference between my Rudge and a 916, by the 1930's the fundamentals were all done, but it was how the designer presented them, it's entirely possible to build a thing of equal beauty today, it doesn't need an extra wheel or anything, it just needs a designer who can create something that no one else has, with unrivalled beauty.

It's a different era though and in comparison to any other biking era motorbikes are just about dead, it's the worst era for bikes since the turn of the 20th century.

Automotive design and technology is currently progressing and innovating at a rate not seen probably since WW2.

The products don't make brmmm brmmm noises though, so people don't see it.

My 98 R1 was like that, if you never went over 7000 rpm in a low gear you'd wonder what the fuss was about.

I rather like them. And have been thinking about a new bike. Trouble is, I think I've already got the perfect bikes for me. I was thinking about trading in the Superduke for the new Triumph 1200 Speed Triple. I test rode one, and it is lovely. And on the track, I think it would be quicker than the 1290r. But it hasn't got the same mid-range punch as the 1300 twin. And after thinking long and hard, I decided I'd rather keep the KTM.

The only thing that really tempts me at all is one of the MV800 triples. But I think that would have to be an "as well as" bike. And I cant afford another one - if I was to get a new bike, something would have to go. The Griso is 13 years old, with nearly 70k miles, so is worth nothing much, and I'd rather keep it than have the £2k or so that I would get for it. So that means trading in the KTM. And nothing else out there is as good, except possibly the 2020 1290r....
