Re: My Orange Royal Enfield- New Bike Thread
Got another hour or so in the garage lunchtime, so connected everything up and thought I'd just check all is good before I get all the panels on- started instantly on the button, so I've heat cycled it once and ( nearly) all is good- exhaust fumes aren't smelly like they used to be, no haze at all and I'm sure it seems a bit crisper / quicker to rev, albeit that might just be psychological
Only slight fly in the ointment is there's a weep from the pipe into the water pump, needs a new O ring so I managed to catch Fowlers just now and one (for the pricely sum of 78p plus £6 for DPD) will be with me tomorrow morning.
I didn't have any anti-freeze on the shelf so its just got water in it at the moment, I'll nip out and grab some tonight .
Fingers crossed work will be quiet enough tomorrow morning for me to finish the job and get out for a little shakedown ride before I have to disappear off to London for a curry and beer tomorrow night.
I am then up at sparrowfart on Friday morning to get on a train up to Manchester to pick up my new van, which I'm quite excited about in itself
Then when I get back tomorrow night I'll pack it with the 525 etc ready for another early morning Saturday off to meet up with Crust and the boys for a day on the lanes.
I'm out again Saturday night, but all being well will get out on the 390 later on Sunday to complete the running in before Brands on Tuesday , weather's looking good for it at the moment, so really looking forward to that!

Come to Donington on 14th or Cadwell on 15th and all will be revealed ( I couldn't get yellow this time without waiting for ever so this one is blue )

Re: My Orange Royal Enfield- New Bike Thread
Spent a very enjoyable day at Brands yesterday with @2xtwins, the day itself was brilliant IMO and is probably worth a thread of it's own and maybe Kev will do one, but this one is about the 390 and how we got on.
It of course had a freshly rebuilt engine with a new Piston etc, I'd only finished getting it all back together the day before so running in consisted of approx 30 miles on the road where everything seemed good so it was loaded into the van and off we went.
I have to say that trackdays on a small bike this one really are brutal on the engines, it's not like a bigger bike where you can just take it a bit steady and change up earlier, etc for a session or two to give it an easy time- there is only one way to ride a bike with only 40hp and not completely mullered by everyone, especially in the fast group, and that is on the stop everywhere so that is what it had from the word go, and it was brilliant.
I'd geared it down a little (-1 off the front) after Lydden as I wasn't even using 6th there, and that proved about right for Brands- when I'd got a good run through McClarens/Clearways, it was just shy of the rev limiter in top at the end of the start-finish straight, indicating 102-103 mph just before shutting off
I'm not sure it's producing any more power than it did before (not that I expected it to), but I am very pleased to report that there is not a hint of oil smoke or smell, , the oil level didn't move a mm over the day, no funny noises or leaks and it's running spot on.
The only slight issue we had was with the front brake in one session- you only use the brakes twice a lap on the 390 (Druids and Graham Hill), but Druids particularly is full-on, and a combination of a tiny fluid reservoir filled to the top mark, race pads in a cheap shopping-bike caliper, and boggo DOT4 fluid meant that it got pretty hot one session and caused the front brake to stick on a bit.
I noticed coming out of Druids that it seemed sluggish and thought uh-oh, and throttled off slightly anticipating a seizure but there were no funny noises or smells so I continued through Graham Hill and it the motor was OK, but seeming down on power and struggling, only pulling 70ish MPH along the Cooper straight where normally I'd see approx 85 , and then when I shut off for McClaren's/Clearways, it dived and slowed so much the penny dropped- the front brake was dragging badly, so in I came- the disc was glowing and the brake lever had gone solid.
Once cooled down all was back to normal, but I removed a few cc of fluid from the reservoir, and took the caliper off, and gave it and the pads a check-over and clean-up, and all seems good now but it's going to get a change to some Motul 660 and I'll keep an eye on things- hoping that I won't have to revert to standard pads as the Bendix MFs really are the business in terms of stopping power improvement on this bike.
Next outing just under 2 weeks time at Donington on 14th, and Cadwell the day after - if we have the same sort of weather and as smooth running days as we did yesterday it'll be perfect- Scorchio!
Anyway, a couple of pics from yesterday, not particularly exciting ones, but I know we all love them anyway

Re: My Orange Royal Enfield- New Bike Thread
Since the above post the little 390 had done another couple of track days at Donington and Cadwell and performed brilliantly ( for what it is )at both.
I haven'tt managed to get it on the dyno again since the rebuild, but its running great, not using any oil so all good there.
It performed well at both those circuits we were mullered on the straights (it's the only bike I can think of that I've ridden at Donington that was recording the same/faster top speed at the bottom of craner as it was at the end of the back straight ) , but was top fun and didn't disgrace itself.
I did have the camera on for a session but unfortunately it was all to cock so nothing worth putting up which is a shame, as I think it would have had some interesting bits on it, but got one or two pics.
It's just sat in a corner of the garage since then, so this weekend I thought I'd better dig it out and give it a once over and treat it to some fresh oil before it's Pembrey outing later this week.
I also thought ( particularly in light of Alan's recent Pembrey email ) that I'd see if I could quieten the Tyga system down a bit- whilst it's not failed a noise test anywhere yet (and Donington was a quiet day), it isn't what I'd call quiet, so I thought I'd re-pack the cans, but before I did I downloaded some free sound meter app to try and assess the success of my work.
This was what I got after I'd warmed it through- it's not that meaningful TBH as it was on tick-over, simply as I was by myself in the garage and my arms weren't long enough to operate the throttle whilst holding the phone near the end-can outlets, but its a reference point, perhaps
THe stuff that was in there was wire wool, and there wasn't much of it so I was quite hopeful that my new, quality packing ( supplied by Pipewerx- it's the stuff that expands when hot, supposedly) would make it noticeably quieter
Didn't seem to make any measurable difference really though either to my ear or the app , but at least I know it's pretty much as quiet as it can be
Anyway, fingers crossed for nice weather for Pembrey- am really looking forward to it, and I'll try to get some video this time

Re: My Orange Royal Enfield- New Bike Thread
Looking at the weather reports on the day before I was due to depart for Pembrey, it was looking very likely that the Saturday would be very wet, so I belatedly sprang into action to try and hunt down some decent wet-weather tyres .
Moto3 size race wets or Michelin PR 4 or 5 would have been ideal for the little 390 , and my thinking was that if I could find some to replace the Dunlop equivalent of Supercorsas that it was wearing then I’d be covered for maximum track-fun whatever the weather did, with the luxury of effectively a “wet bike”, leaving the 890 for dry sessions.
Due mainly to my tardiness it wasn’t possible to find either race wets or PR4/5s in the timescales I needed, but I did track down a (bargain priced, it has to be said- on the face of it at least ) old stock pair of Metz Roadtec 01s in sort of almost the right sizes at M&P in Swansea, and Alan very kindly offered to collect them on his way past on Thursday afternoon and bring them to the circuit, so perfect- I was sorted, or so I thought…
Got to the circuit on Friday morning and it was a bit moist, so wobbled around the first session on the 390 as it was to get my eye in then as soon as I came in got the wheels out and over to Phil to get my new bargain priced “wet” tyres on. As mentioned above, they weren’t quite the ideal sizes , with what I thought at that time the only real thing I might have to work around being the height of the front tyre as it was a 110/80 (I needed d a 110/70 or 65 ) , which meant it would be approx. 22mm bigger diameter, but my thinking was that pulling the forks another 11mm or so up through the yokes would sort that and ensure that the nice fast turn-in is retained.
When fitted though they looked, err, shall we say, slightly less than sporty.... - Maybe the (140/70) rear was intended for a narrower rim than 4”, or maybe its just how its built as they really are Deauville/GS500 type fitments I think, but whatever, the rear particularly didn’t sit too well on the KTM's rim, with the fully inflated profile reminding me of an early Avon Roadrunner / Ford Anglia crossply , which did concern me a bit as the 390s stregth is how far over it goes and but I rationalised it that it hopefully wouldn’t matter too much as I wouldn’t have it so far over in the wet.
And looking on the bright side, it had about a billion more grooves in it than the tyres they’d replaced, so I set pressures, and as the next session was dry, thought it would be an excellent opportunity to give it a bit of a shake-down, check how much (if any) they’d fecked up the sweet handling of the 390, make any relevant adjustments and just get them nicely scrubbed in , in the dry, where I could push a little bit.
It, however, didn’t unfortunately quite turn out like that as we never even made a lap- yes, I was indeed one of those complete dickhead nobbers that crashes on the warm-up lap. In my defence (if there is one) I thought that I was taking it dead steady, feeling my way as I’ve done hundreds of times with brand-new tyres and it had been OK for the first few corners, but well, I guess it wasn’t steady enough as I hadn’t got that far round Dibeni (the long left-hander) when bang, no warning, it was instant, we were on the floor-Arse!!
When I stopped rolling I jumped up wheezing and got the bike to the armco in the hope that they wouldn’t have to stop the session but they did.
I think a bit of me may have got stuck under the bike for a bit or hit by it as I was really winded and struggling to breathe with a sore shoulder blade / chest and most of the thumb and a finger was pretty much missing from my LH glove. My little finger was a bit mushed and my hand was both numb and hurt like fuck- the gloves have just torn like paper, really disappointing and not what I expected of Furygan or that price-point so will be taking that up with them.
Anyhow, thankfully they got my fellow riders back out on their session pretty quickly but not until had the walk of shame past them to the medical centre to take my blood pressure etc before they’d let me go
As soon as we got the bike back we got the wheels out again and I got Phil to put the tyres he’d just taken off back on as this little incident decided me that Dunlop Alphas were massively preferable over Roadtecs as my wet tyres, in the sizes I have on these rims at least.
Damage to the bike was nothing too serious and pretty much superficial so 10 minutes with the spanners and hammer had it right, or right enough to continue for the rest of the weekend so all the crash protection stuff I’ve got on it had earned it’s keep, which is more than can be said for my brand-spanking new Furygan gloves…
So the 390 was effectively the “wet bike” for the weekend, it performed faultlessly again and is such fun as far as it goes, I just wish it had more power, 40bhp just isn’t enough- the chassis and amount of grip it has is just crying out for more so as I’ve mentioned in the Pembrey thread, I’m going to get the measuring tape out over the winter and see if we can’t give it some form of engine upgrade
Oh and a set of decent wet weather tyres are on the list too
I didn't take any pics, and it's still in the van as I type, but I did have the camera on it for a couple of sessions ( sods law not the session we crashed in though) so will download the vids later and if it looks worth watching, post some up here

Re: My Orange Royal Enfield- New Bike Thread
4" sounds a bit wide for a 140 tyre, I think my FZ has a 3.5" rear rim and recommended for that is a 140, I think (and it is think) a 150 or 160 would be more suitable for a 4" rim, though that seems wide for a 40 bhp bike.

Re: My Orange Royal Enfield- New Bike Thread
Track was bone dry but yeah I think you're probably right- at least in part due to release agent, albeit I've scrubbed so many new tyres in and also been caught out once or twice so I'm always mindful of it , but a combination of the release agent and the wrong rim size /profile of them I think- the rear particularly really did suddenly drop away at the edge and I think I just probably forget how far I do get over on the little bike and it was just too much too soon ( or maybe even too much ever, but I'll never know now as they'll be on here or eBay soon for anyone that want them )Potter wrote: ↑Tue Aug 24, 2021 10:28 am Bad luck, crashing on the warm up is never dignified, but shit happens I suppose.
Those tyres sound nasty, although new tyres caught me out once as well, about three streets from the shop, I went around a bend in the road coming to a junction, so I was going about 10mph and the bike slid from under me, I knew the road very well and had been round that bend thousands of times. It must have been the coating on the tyres.
In the wet I suppose that's what happened, it must be really, the tyres can't be that bad?

Re: My Orange Royal Enfield- New Bike Thread
This seemed the most appropriate place to put this- she's a looker and no mistake IMO
As for mine, it's just been sitting in a corner in the garage since Pembrey a little bent and scraped and not even cleaned it yet- my ribs are taking a bit longer to heal than I expected and that has de-tuned me a ittle I will admit , but no excuse really, I need to get off my arse and buy a few bits to straighten it out which I will do over the next few weeks, and it'll be ready to go again.
-Might even put some serious effort into researching bigger/pokier motors for it over the winter as its a cracking little package, just needs (a shit load) more power.
We shall see...

Nice- that's what my 390 should be, although I guess it wouldn't be a 390 then eh !

Re: My Orange Royal Enfield- New Bike Thread
Yeah there’s some very trick bikes, there’s a couple of nice £50k Matchless race bikes at moment, a ‘76 TT winning production bike, a few TT winning Hondas, a hailwood rep with a liquid cooled cbr250 in it. A 6 cylinder cbr375……there’s a Vincent 1000 engined special being built and it turns out the engine is a rare factory race motor worth a fortune, you’ll have to stop by some time and we’ll see what’s in

Sir wants one these:

54 HP ,mmm, suits you.
I'm curious how it makes 20hp more than my EXCF , it just be the extra 1500 rpm and cams.

Re: My Orange Royal Enfield- New Bike Thread
I was going to post that on this thread as i wondered if you had seen it ....... seems Mossy agrees with you completely that its a fab package but just needs a bit more power for track use.
Bit of a bugger the ribs are taking longer as we arent in our 20's anymore, has Isabella got bored of trying to make you laugh to see how much it hurts yet

Re: My Orange Royal Enfield- New Bike Thread
Cheers Rob and no she hasn't, although thankfully now laughing is OK, its just really sneezing and to a lesser extent coughing that gets annoying
But of course the reason it happened is completely down to the number (13 ) sticker I was given for the bike on that day - she wasn't happy at all when I stuck it on and told me to get it changed to another number, but no, I thought that I knew best, and look where that got me
I have been reminded of this fact more than once since the event...
