Them bloody full face snorkeling masks.
Most UK kids have gone home so beaches are a bit quieter so we went snorkeling. We acquired another full face thing so I tried that.

We have a horse shoe shaped lagoon which is cool for snorkeling about 200m across.

About 3/4 of way across the mask was making my jaw hurt, a lot. I felt uneasy and then breathing was a bit difficult. Couldn't face swimming all the way back to headed for the other side.
Bit of sand then 50m walk over lava barefoot to the promenade. Fuck that hurt but the promenade would be OK. No. Red hot from burning sun. About 400m walking on hot coals.

I've just seen that a lot of places are banning the masks because they can cause CO2 problems. That's maybe what I encountered as was taking short breaths and not refreshing the air in the mask. Hmm, not too clever perhaps ?

I stumbled upon a video on utube a while ago with a pro diver explaining the issues that can arise with those types of masks.

Let me get this straight,

The No 1 cause of death in Hawaii for non residents is drowning.

There's an average of 17 drownings per year but are these 17 drownings all tourists or some locals? Dunno

Last year (2018) there were 14 drownings and 5 of them were people wearing full face masks. I guess that 9 of them involved a regular mask and snorkel but the full face mask is 'the Death Mask' (the title of the video). Mmmm, I can see why he would come to that conclusion. Not.

Caveat - there are cheap knock off brands that may be dodgy.

To compare, he brought along a regular mask and snorkel (worn in 9 deaths last year), his full face diving mask and he has his knock off full face mask. If he was going to do a fair comparison, I'd suggest that he should have brought along a branded full face mask. But he didn't, I wonder why.


Of course, he might have a point with cheap masks. I'm only commenting on this video though as I have about 5 of these masks in the house and they have been worn regularly (although not for the last 2 summers cos I've had no family over). Out of everyone I know who goes snorkeling around here I'm the only person who wears a regular mask and snorkel. Everyone has these full face jobs , get a lot of enjoyment out of them and I've never heard of any serious issues with them. As I said previously, they put pressure on my temples (we're don't all have the same shaped head) and they're not good for diving in - for me. I do see others diving in them but then I don't see too many people diving whilst snorkeling anyway.

About finding it difficult to breath? Dunno, didn't have that issue. I think they're ace personally as they've got a lot more people into snorkeling due to not having to mess about with a mouthpiece, which can be uncomfortable for some people.

Ingratitude ???

Maybe this is just me.

A pal of ours just opened a bar in the square and straight away it's busy.
I was there 2 days ago and noticed the bog door was sticking. Needed bottom shaving. She mentioned it and I said it was an easy fix. She said she couldn't get anybody in.

I like to help so took me tools down this afternoon and took the door off and took a few MMs off. Works lovely now. Hardly a thanks. I was driving so didn't have a beer.

Then she added that the door handles in both bogs needed fixing or changing.

So I went into the big city and bought a couple of nice ones.

Walked into town specially with my cordless drill.
She seemed pleased, but counted out the exact amount on the receipt, to the penny.

She offered me a beer, which at €1.50 won't bust the bank.
She chatted in between customers and when the pint ran out, she didn't say a word. The cost barely covered the diesel.

I do things to help folk, but I know the beer costs them 45c a pint, so another pint wouldn't hurt.
She's done well for my 2 hours free labour.


Probably won't pop in as often as I might. So she'll lose custom.

Three fucking hours to attempt to get Shatwest to release a bank transfer that they’d deemed was possibly fraudulent (it wasn’t) which I ended up having to cancel because I couldn’t confirm that all eight of my great grandparents weren’t involved in the fucking great train robbery…

I now have to go to the branch tomorrow to withdraw the cash which I’ve had to pre-order after answering a load of none of their fucking business questions and I need to provide a copy of an invoice to confirm how I’m going to spend my money…

I’m half tempted to tell them I’m going out whoring with the stud pony off of the internet after a day of betting on street fighting whilst snorting Colombia’s finest, just to gauge their reaction…

Riding with arrogant knobs. Went on someone elses group ride today and rode with a guy that I've not met before on an S1000 RR. His profile states "32 years experience, rospa gold, teach advanced riding. Competed in Dakar rally" and he answers what bike(s) do you ride "Lots".

Noticed he was riding up the arse of the lead rider and following him on every overtake. He followed the lead rider on an overtake into a right hand bend - the lead rider got in nice and early, neat and tidy, but in the middle of Mr S1000RR's overtake a car comes around the corner. Everyone panics!! The car he's overtaking slams on it's brakes and comes to an unnecessary, complete stop and the car coming in the other direction applied some brakes - the rider slipped through - maybe feeling like a hero, maybe feeling like a bit of a dick - who knows. He then overtook a car on doubles but without his tyres going over the line at around 60mph with no oncoming traffic

This is why I like to lead - you don't have to see all that shite and can actually ride your own ride. I do have safe and fun friends I can ride with

I once left a Welsh tour (someone else's, not my own) because things were getting silly - too many near misses. One of those responsible for dangerous riding is no longer with us.

I was a bit tetchy yesterday - I don't like to rant but thought better here than to the riding group leadership as there's not a lot they can do either - the ride leader had a word with the offender. This one person represents a third of the club - there are lots like this and we're not there to educate people. All I can do is say that that person is not welcome on any of my trips.
