I was coming out of Peebles this afternoon and went to overtake a couple of cars dawdling in front of me.

Unfortunately as I was alongside the car second in line he went to overtake the car in front.

Slammed his drivers door right into the crash bars on my GS.

How the hell I didn’t come off I’ll never know but I think the wide leverage of the GS bars helped steady it as it weaved all over the road. I think on a sports bike I’d have been off.

Anyway not much discernible damage done. Bent crash bar and broken clutch lever. The only worrying thing is one of the crash bar bolts pulled out of the engine casing but I’m hoping a drill and rethread or helicoil will fix that.

The driver was pretty shaken.

I phoned up his insurance as soon as I got home and although he hadn’t reported it he fessed up as soon as they got on to him. So it’s going into the BMW dealer to get assesssed.

I gotta say Direct Line was impressive. 4 hours after the accident it was all sorted out.

I’m not sure about the damage. It looks like it’s just pulled the bolt straight out the thread and it doesn’t look like there’s even any opening up of the hole. Hopefully it’s fixable, I’ve only had it a few weeks.

Glad you're OK that's the main thing

Same happened to me in 2007. I spent my 30th birthday in Welwyn hospital with 3 bust ribs, a fractured humerus and nerve damage that lost me a working left hand for 9 months. Overtakes made me nervous for a long while afterwards I can assure you!

Hope the bike's OK too. But metals just metal.

Could well be just the thread needs redoing, but if it is down to the dealer they have liabilities to think of. They probably will not want to do the easy fix in case it fails laters and add the cost of new casings etc upping the costs.

They call them Panzers for a reason, not often you can be hit by a car and have not a lot of damage. I am sure the insurance company will milk it for all its worth

That’s why I went straight to the guys insurance (Direct Line) rather than through mine.

I phoned a couple of hours after it happened and gave them the details. It hadn’t been reported yet so they phoned him up and called me back shortly after admitting full responsibility.

I can take the bike anywhere I want to get it fixed (BMW dealer it came from). I can have a hire bike if I want, taxi home from the dealers. Their personal injury department is going to call today to check we’re okay.

I can’t really fault them so far. I’ve no illusions that it wouldn’t be as straightforward going through my insurance

Speaking of hire bikes they sent a list of daily charges just for information which presumably is what they would charge a third party’s insurance. A big bike is £52 a day.

I booked it in to get looked at this morning.

When I mentioned to the workshop guy about the bolt being pulled out he raised the possibility of a new engine.

That’ll be fun. I’m just glad I’m not the one paying.

On the way back from Wales yesterday there were two incidents that I wouldn't say were close as I gave myself a safety bubble. 1. On an open road, national speed limit, no other traffic I was overtaking a car when it pulled out to go around a puddle. 2. The driver in front of me, 40mph limit, slammed on her brakes for a........pigeon.

I guess neither of them were checking their mirrors.

The bikes in the garage getting looked at but it might be a few days till I hear.

I’m pre-empting things here but if it does need a new engine who’s property is the old one?

Apart from the bolt pulled out it’s a perfectly serviceable 12k motor and if you don’t use bars it’s fine. And even if you do it looks repairable.

I’m sort of assuming it’s going to be the property of Direct Line but honestly will they even care?

I’ve got a feeling it might disappear when it’s taken out and if it’s worth a few hundred quid on eBay it’s better in my pocket than theirs.

Try to ask the insurers for the engine, either free or cheap.

You may be competing with the repairer for it.

Pigeons can generally look out for themselves, too!
