Bonnie Engine Management Warning Light

I'm rather out of touch with modern bikes so was wondering if any of you knowledgeable chaps could help ? I'm looking after my son in law's ( 2017 I think ) Bonnie , twin cylinder 900 HT , T100 . I've been starting it up every week , and given it a short run down to the petrol station for a fill up with no bother . However after about two months of this , the orange " ECU " light has come on . I've given it another spin ( 9 miles ) and tried turning on the ignition three times ( starting no bother after 4th ) . I'm now trying three restarts from cold .

Any other ideas please ? tia .

The magic bunny is dead.
You need to get it on a reader and clear the code. There may be a way to do it without a reader....try the Triumph rider website.

I suspect it may be something to do with "I start it very week". They need to cycle through cold start, warm up, thrash and then engine off.

I don't know about Triumph,but on most Japanese bikes the servo motor controlling the exhaust flap (EXUP type thing) is a common culprit.

The mechanism in the exhaust gets stiff/stuck and because the motor can't operate,then it throws a fault code.

As David says,without having a reader you've no way of being sure,but you could lube the cables etc which would do no harm.

As an aside,I'd never start a bike up just for the sake of it. Condensation and emulsified oil isn't great for an engine. During Winter mine goes on the Optimate and isn't started until it's being ridden.

The reader will be (should be!) a stand OBD type, so you shouldn't need a dedicated Triumph bit of kit. Any friendly garage can read it, even car ones IME, so long as you can actually get the bike to them. That may prove problematic!

As Dazzler says, my 2014 Tiger had a standard OBDC2 port, I reset the light using a BT adapter and the Torque App on my phone.

IIRC, if there's no fault or the fault has been rectified the light will turn itself off after a number of heat cycles.

The light came on the Tiger because the battery went duff and it threw a fault with the generator.

Cheers fellas . " Triumph " advised us on the three starts . They also suggested that we check all lights are working and if all that fails , disconnect battery for at least thirty minutes then re-try . Failing that it's off to the Triumph dealers .

Google suggests that you might be able to get the bike to tell you the DTC codes if you hold down the 'I' button and turn the ignition on.

My rents had loads of issues with brake lights and fault warnings. The solution? Take the bulbs out and put them in the other way

So , what I did next..... I watched this on Youtube....



I bought the £10 ( bluetooth ) OBD reader he recommended . Downloaded the ( free ) Torque Pro app on my mobile .

Cleared the error code . After a few more rides the error light came back on , with the same code ( P1576 ) .

Followed the instructions in the first link and soldered a diode in series with the brake light . ( Tested brake light - all good ! )

Cleared error code for 2nd time and took for a test ride . All seems good and hopefully cured . If I don't come back - it's worked .

( As an " amateur " I only cleared the error code because I was convinced it was a " Technical " and not a real problem . If in doubt I'd get it dealer checked . If light and code do return , I'll be off to the dealers anyway ).

I've never done anything with an OBD reader in my life before now , so hope this may help someone else . Thanks again to everybody who commented .

Torque sometimes shows codes that aren't serious enough to put the light on. ODB and Torque are interesting things to play with. I liked Torque so much I paid for the full version.

Today identified fault code P1698 ( I think ) on BIL's Tiger 800 ABS . and removed same , no bother at all . Cheers Bob
