My first pair of rigid gas permeable contact lenses. First CLs of any kind in fact.

Pros - Can see really well now (glasses can't properly fix my particular eye condition).
Cons - Fnnnaaarrggg! There's stuff in my eyes and I'm not allowed to rub them!

Righto...so 3 different sets later it turns out I'm probably allergic to these. I tell thee what, having an allergic reaction on the front for your eyeballs is a less than pleasant experience.

When you say allergic, what do you mean? It would be unusual for someone to be allergic to the actual lens, more like that having the lens in (which is a foreign object) is amplifying existing allergies? They do tend to be more uncomfortable when it’s hot or during hay fever season.

Lens allergy/incompatibility isn't that uncommon apparently. In me it manifests as extremely dry eyes and over production of mucus and oil. The lens fog over like they're covered in greasy finger prints. The dryness also means they "sucker" onto the cornea and distort it out of shape. Even after I've taken them out it takes maybe 15 mins for my corneas to spring back and my vision to improve!

As I said, this is the 3rd set I've taken home and the 7th set I've tried over all. Luckily I took the optician's advice an bought them with a warranty the first time so all of this is included in the price. She thought at first maybe the edges were too tight, hence the multiple sets.

I'm trying monthly disposable soft ones next. You can actually get them for KC now, they're slightly thicker and stiffer than regular disposable. If that doesn't work there are at least 2 different materials of RGP I could try, or there are also hydrophilic coatings available now which help keep water on the surface.

Hope you get sorted soon. Fitting lenses for KC is more of an art than a science. FWIW the corneas keeping the shape of the lens is entirely normal. It takes mine a good hour or two to settle and be able to see out of my glasses when I take my lenses out.

Some with KC have two set of glasses, one for when they first take their glasses out and one for when their eyes have settled back to their normal shape.

They have these new things called " spectacles"... Well...fairly new, i have been wearing them for 67 years...they make oi look proper clever...and no reactions. ( unless someone smacks you in the face for being a smart arse).

I used to have a twin rail version of that with adjustable height and width, I was really looking for a replacement copy but couldn't find anything except them single rail jobbies now

I had a bit of birthday money given to me, so went into that bastion of middle class desires, known as John Lewis. Saw a Barbour jacket and slipped it on, decided that I liked it and better get one for when my six numbers come up and I own a country estate with a trout lake. Looked at the price tag. £239. Bit trumpy, put it back on the hanger.

Got home and the wife's telling me to buy it if I like it (I am notoriously tight when it comes to buying things for myself), so I jump on the JL app. Same jacket is £194. Go figure.

Mrs Gremlin then makes a good point. Perhaps a near relative, who works in a middle-class supermarket, could get the 25% off. Turns out he can.

Ends up costing me £144. (I know Yorick will like this story as it's about saving a few quid )
