Sadly, I heard today that Paul Daws, Wanganui, passed away on the 22/8, aged 87. Such a lovely and knowledgeable motorcyclist, always interested and chatty. Paul was a (lucky) participant in an iconic crash photo from the 1960 Cemetery Circuit Racing. This is at the Rail Overbridge leading onto the Start/Finish straight. The Outfit is an Arial Square 4 and Paul is on the right. Owen Sutter was the passenger. Paul raced a 7R and other British bikes.

I've been to Wanganui and the locals talked fondly about the races there.

The GS500 is a much better handling bike (once the biro-spring front forks and rear shock have been replaced with something more robust) than most people give it credit for. But that's some angle of lean!

He's probably sponsored by Arthur Daley's Harley Davidson. The number plate has been Photoshopped and his riding makes him look pretty fair tbh. Quite a good demonstration that you don't need some 200bhp exotica with carbon this and titanium that until your riding is good enough for it though.

I remember him from the roadbike trackday we did at Brands a couple of months back- seeing a GS500 with clip-ons on warmers was different, and I watched him in a session or two.
He can definitely ride and goes well although that vid makes him look faster than he is, and the bike was noticeably using oil....

He says in the youtube comments he's running 57s, which is decent but not exactly setting the world alight, so was clearly a poor/slower group. 57s is the back end of fast, high end of inters i'd say.... but that group he looked like the only person running that sort of pace.
The problem for me though was his overtaking on the brakes, which was very very late, i'll bet he sat up a few people mid-turn-in. Of course on a GS500 you can't use the power to pass, so you have to do it on the brakes, but that brings a level of complexity to trackdays.

Also, why does the video never show you him doing more than one continuous lap, it cuts away to some pit action and back again. I'm guessing that because he's using warmers he goes like fuck on the first two laps of the session, passing all the people going slow on their outlaps.

Or I'm just jealous of his skills.

For this non track day person and the obvious lack of understanding of track day protocols, when I look at race pics and trackday pics, the position of riders is totally different in most cases. Track day people mostly seem to be sitting on a bike and hanging off of it a bit. Racers seem to move round much more and get down alongside the bike. So are we not admiring this guys commitment to getting his times down by adopting a more race like stance? Do you track day guys not think you can learn anything from him?

The CB500S has another 5-6 hp over the GS in stock trim. That's why very few people ever raced the Suzukis in Thundersport 500s even though the GS was by far the better handling bike.
