You're probably right. I'm a poor person and I clocked up about 130,000 miles in the three years I had a company Sierra and about 120,000 miles in a Mondeo.

(The Sierra was an old banger when it went back, the Mondeo felt like it would easily do another 120,000 miles.)

Pah! I tried, but failed narrowly, to do 'moon miles' (~230,000) in my old Volvo 2.5T estate. I even kept it going when I had a new car.

My old man ran his BMW 3 series 2.3(I think) auto petrol till 230 000ish miles. By that point reverse gear was sometimes optional, the heater was at best erratic and the electric accesories were beginning to be unreliable but it started every time and never broke down. After about 100K it was serviced occasionally by a "local" garage and thrived on neglect.

When I put my Rover 216 upside down in a ditch I needed a car ASAP for as little money as possible.

I bought a Mk2 Golf GTI 8V 90-Spec for £500, it was a great car and it came with a foot high pile of receipts and history.... the last 8 MOT's all said 138,000 miles, so god knows what the real mileage was.

I had a diesel Astra, 1.7TD, bought (for £1k) with 121,000 on the clock. I took it to 186,000, then sold it for £240 - to a mechanic who wanted to use it as a service loan car! Only fault was that the one-touch close on an electric window had failed.

I don't think I'll ever see that high a mileage again.

I did the same, so that was 220k in total. Mind you it needed some fettling by then, but I still saw it occasionally for the next few years.

they were flabbergasted when I explained that sprinters of that age with that engine will reach 450,000 as long as it doesn't rust out first !

My first car was a 1983 1.2ohv mk1 Astra. I bought it with 98k on the clock and sold it (albeit for peanuts) when it had 250k on the clock. Apart from normal stuff, i replaced the alternator and starter motor.

Fuck loads of welding though.

I bought my Peugeot 405 GTDT tax free when I got promoted to Warrant Officer. It was a superb car. It had the 1800 turbo diesel engine and about a year later they replaced that engine in 405s with the ubiquitous 1900 diesel. My 1800 ran flawlessly up until I sold it with 216,000 on the clock. At that time one of the sunroof cables had broken and it had two tiny rust spots - the body was galvanised.

I did most of the work on it myself, which included steering bits, new shocks (twice iirc), brakes as and when, cam belts (2 x 8mm bolts to lock the engine and swap the belt) etc. I didn't want to rip the headlining out so hadn't sorted the sunroof.

It was quite simply an excellent car, comfortable, economic, roomy, and very reliable. My one criticism is not with the car but with Michelin. I ran it on Michelin MXVs and MXV 2s for a number of years and it worked beautifully but suddenly they stopped making them and the Michelin Energy tyres were nowhere near as good or lasted as well.

Best car I've ever owned.
