Warranties.

Post by Yorick »

After @Dodgy knees asked about dealer servicing I decided to ask a few manufacturers.

Honda replied within 15 minutes.

Thank you for contacting Honda UK Customer Service.

Honda Motor Company (UK) as manufacturer would always encourage our customers to use the support of our trained Technicians based at our authorised dealership. Thus, we could ensure our customers that all recommendations from the manufacturer have been followed and only Honda genuine parts would be used.

However, we cannot limit our customers to use only Honda authorised dealerships. In order for the warranty to be kept valid in case you decide to use non-Honda dealership, the following requirements should be met: the dealership has to be VAT registered, as Honda might require written proof of the service in the future in any case, only Honda genuine parts to be used and Honda service and maintenance procedures to be followed.

If any of the above-mentioned requirements was not met and a routine service has been carried out leading to an occurring damage, the affected parts of the vehicle, will not be covered under the warranty.

We hope that the above statement answers your queries.

Thank you for contacting Honda UK. If there is anything else we can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Kind Regards,

Yordan Markov

Wow. Kawasaki just came back as well

We can confirm authorised dealers have access to the very latest Manufacturer product training, workshop manuals, technical information, diagnostic systems, and specialised tools which are all necessary in maintaining Kawasaki products. Naturally, for an owner of our products to receive the highest level of service available from Kawasaki, we strongly recommend the use of an authorised dealer.

We understand some owners may wish to use an independent dealer or carry out the work themselves. If in the unlikely event an issue arises with a machine, Kawasaki cannot accept responsibility or cover a repair under warranty if incorrect or incomplete maintenance work is found to be the cause, or a contributory factor towards the failure. We are also unable to consider assistance towards a repair if an issue is service related and the service history of the vehicle cannot be proven. We would however cover any failure that is a clear manufacturing defect and is unrelated to any service or maintenance work undertaken.

Therefore, the use of an independent dealer or undertaking the work yourself will not invalidate the manufacturers warranty providing all maintenance on the machine is completed and can be substantiated in accordance with Kawasaki's guidelines

Kind regards

Yamaha.???

I think to be on the safe side and keeping it simple, whilst under warranty, main dealer it is.

Good work that man. 👍

You've not just got that though in the decision these days, you've got recalls, both software and physical, you've got ECU/IMU updates, mapping updates. Heck several KTMs have had software updates that change both the engine mapping characteristics and the electronic suspension settings/handling. So whilst you can say "the oil and filter has been done" you can't exactly say that about everything.

The law was changed a while ago. I put that in my letter to them and they didn't argue. I still got messages and recall stuff from Suzuki despite not having my bikes serviced with them.

If a maker has updates, they should be available to all buyers.

Well yes, but you have to take it there still as well as hearing about it.

What if you're not the first buyer, how will Yamaha/Suzuki know who you are if you bought it used ?

It's EU law - manufacturers also have to make the service schedules and any updates etc. public knowledge. Non-franchise dealers will/should know where to look, if they're any good. The BMW specialist I take my car to for example has all the bulletins the main dealers get.

DVLA sorts it out.

I was the 2nd owner of my R1 in 2000 and Yamaha contacted me for a recall on the brake pads and side stand bolt, I bought it from a Yamaha dealer so they probably told Yamaha, same thing happens with Suzukis, if you tell them you own it they'll contact you for recalls.

Warranty only ever covers you for manufacturing defects, my new GSX has 18 months left on it, I doubt if anything is going to go wrong that hasn't happened in the last 18 months

DVLA are involved for recalls. I had stuff about the VW group engine emissions cheat despite not being first owner.

I think there may be different levels of recall though, not sure.

The "this is definitely gonna make you die in a firey explosion" kind can be done through the DLVA. The less important ones, the 'convience' ones I suppose you might call 'em (e.g. central locking might not work), require you to actively seek them out/go to a dealer who bothers to do that.

EDIT: Product recall vs. Service Bulletin - that's the words I'm looking for.

Yamaha don't seem to care...

Thank you for choosing Yamaha Motor.

Your reference number in our system is: 67812

Servicing your bike with another dealer will not automatically invalidate the warranty, but please make sure that the dealer registers each service interval.

On the other hand, we do strongly advise to let the services be carried out by a certified Yamaha dealer, as our contractors receive regular training from Yamaha and have the special tools on site.

If we can be of any further assistance,
please do not hesitate to contact us.

I don't think I'd be worried about them pulling out cos of an independent service, I'd just want a smooth ride if there were any issues. And if everything has been done by the manufacturer then there can be no arguments or hold ups if you have a warranty issue. Plus on the off chance I was likely to change in 2 years time a full manufacturers service history looks better for resale. Once the bikes a few years old though I wouldn't bother.

Suzuki's reply

Dear Taipan,

Thank you for your enquiry. We do not anticipate any problems with our vehicles as they are strongly glued together with garish decals. Sometimes engines go wrong, but that's life innit. Our dealers are bestest cos we do coffee and everyfink.

All best,
