The red one with 88k I think I'd pass on. If you're doing a good few miles going to wales and back regularly, it'll not be long until that mileage passes the psychological milestone of 100k which will affect resale. But if you're going to keep it it for 4-5 years, then go for it? I think there's better options out there?

I feel a bit like I'm banging a drum here, but having driven all sorts of cars and trucks, there probably isn't anything else I'd drive now (as a daily beater) other than a decent Jap 4x4.

No, the CRV is a Honda Civic with a different body shell and a system that operates a bit like a diff where it it senses that the front wheels are slipping then it can shift some power to the rear wheels, we had it on our Volvo but I'm sure I remember reading stories of people trying to drive like they had a proper 4x4 and it can't cope, one side of the car is slipping away whilst the front and rear wheels on the other side aren't moving.

I'm sure it's going to be better than a normal bog standard 2 wheel drive Civic, and will probably get you though what you need, but it's not a 4x4.

LOL i'm not going to the jungle in it The places we're going may not exactly be ASDA car-park at times and a little more rugged, but people are getting in and out in most vehicles.. As per earlier, the mondeo was a bit long and low... but it was only twice it showed it's ugly head in that terms, so a CRV/Kuga/even the QQ are night and day in terms of what we need for the locations.

Sorry Bud, but I can't follow your logic there? With a 10k budget you should be giving a crap about anything you buy, but I certainly wouldn't be buying a less nice car in case I got it dirty! Treat it to a ceramic coating and just jet wash the underneath and it'll keep looking well.

That's a lovely low mileage thing and potentially misses out on one of the 'space' briefs.... but other than that is perfectly awesome. We've got a 2018/19 Focus already parked outside the house with the same engine, although hers is an ST line i think which has heated seats, steering wheel which the one here doesn't seem to have... But they're known quantities as we've had a shit tonne of Fords, from Mondeos to Focus and a Fiesta or 2...

All of that said, they're a very low car, both in road presence and ground clearnace which basically wipes it out.

What do those give you that a normal car (or his current car) give you?

A bit of ground clearance perhaps, not enough to swing it for me, or pretend 4x4 which might not make much difference?
Can you fit the bikes or a lot more gear in them?

An Estate would have more load space than a normal sized SUV, maybe not a 7 seater.

The thing that lets a normal estate down is ground clearance.

The jacked up estates have that.

I've obviously missed a bit of thread, I didn't realise you'd sold it.

Well it was a weird one.... at the weekend @crust Mondeo imploded and is off to the great Scrappy in the sky.

I don't need a car at the moment, so i threw him the keys and delivered him the QQ to get to work this week while he thought about the next incoming car. The conversation then progressed to him saying "go on then, i'll buy it off you" so i sold it to him for PX money. Hence, now i'm without a car. I'm happy because i'd decided i wanted something petrol and with a bit more space anyway... this then brought the situation to a head and i now really need something... Although i don't 'need' it at the moment as such as i rarely go out in the car.. but in 2 weeks the boy comes out of plaster and we'll be hitting the trails again as soon as he realistically can... Then we'll deffo need a car.

4x4s with front, really and centre diffs are good off road, but they drive like Jeeps.

I've got a few friends that have had'/have got Kuga's, CRV's and the Skoda but the bigger one.

They all rate them, so essentially, it's finding one YOU like! (Needle in haystack?! ). The Kuga's can be really nice inside - I don't know if Ford still do it but they used to have the same models with different levels of finish, and the higher the level the nicer it was. I'd say it's definitely worth a look at one

To compare - I drove a mates LHD Audi Q something big, auto, hi spec and have also driven another mates Kuga, auto, reasonable spec (haven't asked, but he's even more of a messy bugger than the Audi guy and also has a dog that travels in the car with him, not always in the back! So the finish isn't 100% comparable)

For me, I'd never have the Audi and wouldn't particularly want to try any other version. It wasn't comfy for me and didn't drive as well as the Kuga. I'd happily have a Kuga any day if that type of car was what I was looking for


I do get that yours and my needs/wants on cars are different as much as our driving styles probably are. But I just wouldn't discount the Kuga or the Skoda.
(Not driven a Skoda Supreme, which is what one of my mates totally swears by, but she gets another to replace each one when it hits mileage or gets taken out by a passing car or boar!!)
