Melting point of HDPE is only 125ºC
It goes very soft way before then, you wouldn't be able to sterilise the bottle.
It does raise a question about introducing so much plastic into the human food chain though. It's really not good for you!
Doesn't have to be HDPE though.
Back when I worked in stoodent bars we had placcy pint glasses which went through the really hot dishwasher.
More recently, baby Ds bottles were plastic and they got sterilised in the microwave using steam.
Must be other reasons you can't/don't use placcy refillable milk bottles.
Milk bottles don’t have to be HDPE but as a matter of fact, they are.
Placcy pint glasses and coke bottles etc will be PET, melts at 260C, much easier to sterilise. I assume the shape of the handle precludes the use of PET for milk jugs due to its inherent stiffness so that such a structure would be too brittle.
