Re: In todays news...
The Independent ran an item about the rubbish left behind after Apleby Horse Fair. They don't want put the blame for the mess on pikies, the article has the line:
Attendance is bolstered by a much wider community from all walks of life, people who share an interest in horses and caravanning.
It amused me anyway.

You would hope that (a) he's being his normal cheeky self (b) he's playing up to the bbc-docu-genre-bollocks, but I think a lot of us overprivileged observers would say "well, you're running out of excuses". And I would also encourage his audience not to sit there and revel in new found equality because the next wave of underprivileged is on your threshold and want you to acknowledge them. The likes of Priti Patel should probably be a touch less hard line you'd have thought, show a bit of empathy.SirLen wrote: "That's also what this documentary is about. It's about that feeling of 'well, come on, I fitted in. Now what? I've integrated, now what happens?'."
As for Glastonbury, the lack of headline diversity is surprising. Maybe mostly surprising that it's taken this long to become a headline itself.

Should be quite substantial if successful. Apparently the abandoned flight cost £500,000 which ended up being nearly £100k per customer. Aren't there any scheduled flights?

Re: In todays news...
I wondered why Lennie Henry didn't go to Glastonbury (I'm assuming he doesn't).
Then I realised that he's black. On that basis, he'd have a better idea than me why black people don't go.
All just a bit of racist rhetoric then.

I assume black people that don't go to festivals don't go for the same reason I don't - they don't want to.

That's not good enough, Emily Eavis is already aplogising as it's her fault for not being progressive enough and managing her quotas.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Wed Jun 15, 2022 11:35 am I assume black people that don't go to festivals don't go for the same reason I don't - they don't want to.
It seems like black people will only go to see a black headliner, maybe white people should not go on those years if that's how it works.

Re: In todays news...
Today US Fed (central bank) interest rates went up by 0.75%
Doesn't sound much, does it?
In reality it's an absolutely huge change from previous rates (which were in the range 0.75% to 1%) to the new range of 1.5% to 1.75%
So an increase of 0.75% to 1.5%, a relative increase of 100%, to an increase of 0.75% to 1.75%, an increase of 75%.
This will drain liquidity from the world economy which is essentially US$ based.
Don't think I'd want to be in European Central Bank shoes ...

Re: In todays news...
I looked at all the acts today, there must be 500 of them, so who's headlining is really based upon who's likely to raise the biggest crowd. I recognise about a score if that, I've no idea what race any of them are really, you'd have to purposely exclude anyone from a non white background and I really doubt that happens.
It feels like nitpicking but then Lenny is a real nobody these days, I guess he needs to be controversial to get noticed.

I used to like him in the 80s when I didn't see his colour. All were equal.
But now he lives his life black and moans about everything.
Some folk want to be more than equal.

Watching a Jules Holland Xmas show a few years ago, Adele was singing, everyone was dancing and generally having a good time. Lenny Henry joined in the singing and to be fair to the bloke he was miles better than Adele. For this alone I admire him.

I used to live right next to the site, as a teenager, but I have to agree!! LOL I have loads of friends (and one family member) that love it and go as often as possible. I've been once for work and visited on a couple of Sundays (it used to be free to locals on a Sunday afternoon I think), but I just can't bring myself to go and camp and deal with all that that brings!! LOLLe_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Tue Jun 14, 2022 4:46 pmBut there has been (according to the article, personally I find the Glastonbury Festival a tedious load of bollocks)
The music I like is in some small stages on the outskirts - but I get to go see that music live for less money, walking through less mud whenever I feel like it!!

BoE, who I thought would be emboldened by the Fed's strong action, once again has done, IMO, too little, too late by raising rates by just 25bp. The market had more of less priced in a 50bp hike today, hence why GBP is sliding down today, sitting around 1.1670 currently. Inflation is running amok and chipping away will do nothing. Rates need to rise far more aggressively than this if we're to weather the storm.
Better a short, sharp recession now than a long, drawn out out one.
