Anyone care to guess the difference that fairing makes in mph?

Ha ha. I read that and was gonna ask same question as it surprised me

When i looked at the numbers it makes, it made sense. Shed loads of torque and bugger all hp.
For speed you need big hp numbers over 170 is as drag becomes exponentially power sapping

When running on salt the most important thing is aero. A Gazillion horses are irrelevant when the aero brick wall is reached, all it does is spin up the wheels.

A long time ago, back in the 60s the MotoGP ancestors ran on 2 stroke engines with several categories based on engine displacement.

The most junior category was the 50cc, where constructors and pilots had to squeeze the most of a tiny engine. Multi cylinder setups were showing up until FIM declared that from 1968 on, engines had to be single cylinder with a maximum of 6 gears.
So the engine in the picture never got a chance to prove itself, but the numbers were impressive: V3, 2 stroke, 20k rpm, 19bhp and 14 gears! The gears were necessary because it had a usable range of only 500 rpm!

He said there was a 500cc car class. Everyone used Norton engines. Their boss considered having a 10 cylinder engine, so had a 50cc miniature engine copy made to test.

Strolling down the local High St yesterday I saw not one but two of these looking all sparkly and new.



They were closely followed by a chap on a BMW 1250GS. The Aprilias didn't look any smaller than the GS! (In fact they were probably 'taller' - the blokes riding them were definitely longer legged than the chap on the BMW).

When i did the Triumph factory tour there was a guy in their paint shop doing pin striping by hand.
